THE NECROMANCER BWAHAHA!! Can't Post

One of the great things about making The Hobbit into a movie is the ability to play off of the many ideas that Tolkien introduced in The Hobbit. One of these "underdeveloped" (not in an insulting manner at all) themes is that of the Necromancer. I think it would be really interesting to the plot to play with this idea more. Perhaps a wizard battle (eh eh) or the necro's involvement the final battle. I could be an interesting contrast between the two wizards, one a symbol of hope, wisdom, wit, leadership; against one of complete darkness, evil and despair.

I just wold want to see how awesome his clothing and staff would be...

Thoughts?

Welcome to TORn, Alanthus! [In reply to] Can't Post

I would be surprised if GDT and PJ *don't* feature the Necromancer, especially in Film 2. However, are you aware that the Necromancer is Sauron? Check out the "Tale of Years" in Appendix A of LOTR. Tolkien has already described what happens to him during the time of the Hobbit: being driven out of Dol Guldur by the White Council and setting up house back in Mordor. Since the whole point of Film 2 is to bridge The Hobbit and the LOTR movies, and since it makes sense to show at least a bit of Sauron's back story, I doubt they'll diverge from Tolkien much where he is concerned.

That said, your point about how they're going to handle his looks is a great one! I'm sure whatever form they chose will be impressive to see.

Welcome again! Smile

Welcome! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey, Welcome to the boards, Alanthus! I'm really curious to see what they do with the Necromancer, too. Especially since they have to reconcile Saruon the Necromancer with Sauron the Giant Lighthouse.

Hope to see you around some more! Always nice to see new people around here.

I don't know... [In reply to] Can't Post

Wouldn't that look too much like Wan Kenobi/Darth Vader from Star Wars ?

I imagine the Necromancer (that laughter in the topic title reminded me of the Joker trailers I saw for Dark Knight) looked a bit like Black Riders. Cloaked figure, hooded...but it will be nice to see it developed.

Will the Necromancer ever be on-screen? [In reply to] Can't Post

In Tolkien's works, it would appear that the Necromancer/Sauron were physical beings, at least according to Gollum's description of 4 fingers on the black hand, so it would be interesting to see just how he is portrayed in the upcoming movie(s). However, if film 2 is going to bridge the gap between The Hobbit movie and LOTR, how could you physically portray the Necromancer in an earlier time, when years later, as Sauron, he still doesn't yet have the power to take physical form? I'm guessing the Necromancer will be another off-screen protagonist in the upcoming movies, as Sauron was in LOTR. PJ kinda backed himself into a corner with the first three movies.

Well, actually, consider [In reply to] Can't Post

Saruman and Gandalf speak of Sauron not being able to take physical shape./ . . but they don't say from what point! Galadriel never says in the intro that Sauron never took shape again until The Fellowship. Nowhere in the films is that stated. So it can be argued that Sauron assumed a lesser form, was deprived of it in his battle with The Council, and soon after fled to Mordor, taking form as the great eye upon the completeion of the Baradur renovations.

"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necromancer Interesting, I had no idea necromancy had other meanings, other than raising the dead. So which definition had Tolkien in mind ?

The meaning of Necromancer [In reply to] Can't Post

Until now I thought Necromancer was a name that Tolkien had created! I thought google might have the translation of it's meaning but then all these results with Necromance came up which is when I realised it was an actual word, kind of (apparently there was a death metal band in Germany called NecromanceLaugh).
So then I found the dictionary defintion for Necromance but not Necromancer.
1. a method of divination through alleged communication with the dead; black art. 2. magic in general, esp. that practiced by a witch or sorcerer; sorcery; witchcraft; conjuration.

Nice! Smile

Howdy and Welcome! [In reply to] Can't Post

Great plot twist! That would be fascinating to see... or, maybe, a Necromancer and a Dragon fighting for power and the winner got the Mountain ;)

So glad you found your way here, Alanthus :D
