Sauron should play a major role in the second movie! If Del Toro can make Smaug an incredible character in the first movie, he should do the same for Sauron in the second. The LOTR's trilogy does not show Sauron him self much other than a couple shots in figure and quite a few as the Eye of Sauron. The Hobbit (first movie) probably won't show Sauron at all, so why not largely base him in the second! If theres not enough information of Sauron given between The Hobbit and the LOTR, I'm sure Del Toro and the team can come up with a awesome story. Anyways, my two cents. Chris

I might be interested in what they would do with Sauron's manifestation as the Necromancer. And what was his Mirkwood home like? Flitting with ghosts? The undead? What, exactly, was he up to that earned him such a disturbing, intriguing title/

That's true! From what I've figured Sauron did have corporeal form. He wasn't just an eye manifestation. It'd be great to see something of him as the necromancer. Cet

Sauron as a Necromancer? An intriguing thought...

I always pictured the Necromancer as a cliche ghosty thing in a long tattered black robe. How unique of me...lol.

If they use Sauron it will be interesting to see how he will look. He changed his form into a wolf and a serpent, when he did battle with Huan. When Huan released him, he became a vampire. He used his Annatar guise, which was a beautiful manifestation to give the elves the knowledge on how to make the rings of power. All the while he was fortifying Mordor against any attack the elves could muster. Then in the destruction of Numenor, Sauron's beautiful body was destroyed, and he lost forever the ability to take on any beautiful forms. According to Wikipedia (I'm of two minds about using them but here goes)...... War against the Last Alliance In relatively short order Sauron assumed a new physical form and began to rebuild his forces. Now unable to take such fair shapes as he had used to deceive the Elves and seduce the Númenóreans, he assumed the form of a tall warrior with black armor on burning black skin and had terrible raging eyes, and could only rule through terror and force from then on. <snip> The traumatic loss of the Ring greatly weakened Sauron. He did not swiftly rebuild, as he had done following the Downfall of Númenor. Sauron spent the first thousand years of the Third Age as a shapeless, dormant evil.

What might work is if they transplant the Numenor idea to Dol Guldor. Namely, Sauron's "mortal" body gets destroyed, thus giving a concrete villain for The Hobbit and possibly F2, but not conflicting with the established film canon.

is that Sauron lost his body during the prologue, when Isildur cut the ring from his hand.

I think he lost ability to assume fair form (only) after the downfall of Numenor. He could only reincarnate within a hideous body after that. Cet

but you were talking about film canon, and I wonder if no-readers do understand that? To someone who doesn't know much about Tolkien, the prologue could look like Sauron was destroyed there. IMO, of course. (And the Sauron at the Last Alliance *was* hideous!) Anyway, it will be interesting how Sauron will be portrayed in the Hobbit and F2, if at all. In a book it works well to have a main villain that has no body, but in a movie that's a bit more difficult.

My feelings are that sometimes you're better off letting people wonder and/or just use their imagination for something. Hitchcock used to do that in some of his movies and H.P. Lovecraft did it a lot in his books too. Maybe if they just showed a glimpse of something flying away in the depth of the woods? Who knows? That just might work! Or is it to much Harry Potteresque?
