Refridgerated pony suits....

I don't know how true this is, but...... .... someone i know in NZ who rides has a friend whose Icelandic pony has been provisionally hired for 18/12 for a Dwarven riding pony. Apparently though, the pony's summer coat isn't the right degree of shagginess, so the production team is looking into shaggy pony suits (all-encompassing) to create the right look. However, to ensure the animals can stand to be in them for hours on end, they've talked about refridgerated shaggy pony suits. She is quite removed from the filming, so has no inside scoops or requirements regarding confidentiality, but obviously her pony's welfare does require some info. Interesting idea if true (and third-hand).

are quite a distinctive breed, and probably not that common in NZ. Those regularly in work would probably be clipped over summer (and horses / ponies get smoother lighter coats naturally over summer, as do those kept covered over winter). As you know, NZ is just coming out of summer. Like i said though, it is third-hand, and i don't know if it is true, but it gives a feel for what a Dwarven riding pony might look like.

Was just thinking with all the horse riding in NZ... that there might be a breeder that would have ponies with heavier coats... I can totally see a Far Side comic strip with a pony taking off a shag coat with some kind of a funny tagline.

The idea of fitting ponies with refrigerated pony suits is right up there with the fake two-man pony on the slopes of Caradhras. :D
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." Sorry, having a childhood flashback fangirl moment from when I was a kid and I was obsessed with My Little Ponies. I should have grown up in Rohan.

This is the fun side of "movie magic" that I love hearing about on TORn. I never knew there was such a thing!
Silverlode "Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them. Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you." -On Fairy Stories

but horses. This rare Viking/Icelandic breed is a small horse and looks like a large pony. Is this the point? If our actors, pretending to be dwarves and hobbits, ride on horses that look like ponies, then they will look like small men, if you see what I mean, LOL! I rode on these horses in Iceland a few years ago. Viggo Mortensen and his son used to visit this particular riding stable and I was told I was riding Viggo's horse. (I expect they're all told that!) The horses are lovely creatures and have a distinctive and smooth fifth gait where they use both right legs then both left legs together. A great ride if you can make them do this.

That sounds crazy - full body suit for a horse, just for the shagginess? If they need them more shaggy, then have them film these scenes in the winter, then they will have the right coat. When this pony is kept as an Iceland pony should, means in an open stable, then the shaggy coat will come automatically as soon as it gets colder. Probably more shaggy than they dream of! And believe me, I know all about shaggy Iceland pony winter coats - I've got the questionable pleasure to scrubb one clean for more than 21 years after my darling has been rolling in the mud with it. The longest hairs I have found so far are 19 centimeter long! And no, I don't talk about mane and tail.
