Re-use / re-build

When they (eventually!!) get around to actually shooting The Hobbit, which sets will they be able to re-use from LOTR? Obviously the Hobbiton set will be re-used, but it will need a lot of work to get it looking the way it did. Depending on whether or not they show the White Council, they may need to re-build the Rivendell set, too. Can anyone think of any others? Smoff

Do we want the sets to be reused?

As the tone of The Hobbit is different from LotR, the sets could be subtley different too- with a bit more colour, and a touch more whimsy(?) to suit the story. In terms of revisiting locations, Hobbiton and Rivendell are the obvioius ones. I agree Bagend and Hobbiton will likely be the same as FotR. Rivendell on the other hand has quite a different atmosphere in The Hobbit, with the dwarves and Bilbo arriving to dancing and singing on Midsummer's eve. This is quite different from the serious debate of the Council of Elrond in FotR and will probably require a different set (though sharing much of the same concept design). The trolls location could be reused, but probably not. Does the White Council take place at Rivendell? I thought it was at Lorien but can't remember (there are several meetings anyway and Lorien would make more sense for Gandalf to get to from Mirkwood). Anyway I'd prefer the White Council to be left to the bridge film.

I imagined the White Council as taking place in Orthanc. Do any of the books specify the council's location?
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. it took place in Mirkwood (why, I don't know). I just have a vague thought that Gandalf had just discovered it was, in fact, the Necromancer taking shape again around there and had summoned the members of the council there. Don't know where I got that from.
Hanging out with the Lonely Isle elves.

I think there will be as much reuse as possible...

...not only because WETA has already invested so much into it, and so much was saved, that it'll be an excellent opportunity to control costs. But also because there is much parallelism between the storylines/story events. There's plenty of things that are different to keep it fresh, as it is.

I assumed because Galadriel summoned all to the first Council, they met at Lothlorien; and after Saruman was appointed head of the Council, they had their subsequent meetings at Orthanc. Just a conjecture, mind you. I haven't read the HoME stories that may have more info. It would stand to reason that the meetings would take place at the location of the head. Especially since it was Saruman. He didn't travel much, and his ego would demand it, imho. So, whilst Bilbo and the Dwarves were skuttling through Mirkwood and on to Lake-town then the Mountain, Gandalf was with the White Council in, I assume, Isengard (his business to the South). Here's a quote from the Silmarillion:
In the late summer of that same year (2941) Gandalf had at last prevailed upon Saruman and the White Council to attack Dol Guldur, and Sauron retreated and went to Mordor, there to be secure, as he thought, from all his enemies. Ninety years before this, Gandalf met with the Council and tried to persuade them to attack and Saruman voted him down. This time, it worked :)

As far as Hobbiton is concerned

someone made the point recently that they probably have oooodles of footage that could be used for the front and back end of The Hobbit, but how much they'd need for film 2 is questionable. I'd assume most of that film will be about the doings outside the Shire, so again there'd only be a bit o' Bag End and Shire footage needed. Rivendell could be the same thing. They have lots of footage for that already, but probably will need some interiors. I know they have to be in an open area for the moment Elrond holds the map up to examine the moon letters/runes... but other than that, there's nothing specific. It would be wonderful to see Bilbo scolding the singing Elves while standing at the same railing Frodo did when he first stepped out to survey Rivendell after waking. I'm not too sure we'll see any singing Elves, though ;) They'll need the interior for Orthanc for whenever they have the White Council meeting. I'm thinking there's going to be more of Saruman as we see him becoming corrupted and weaving his webs. Mayhaps seeing him create his alliance with Wormtongue, which means more of Brad Dourif!! *applause* It's possible the Company could stop by the Prancing Pony, but not necessary. They could use the old Shelob's Lair set for the Goblin's cave. I don't think they could use it for the Lonely Mountain's caves. Except for the back door/secret tunnel, I've always pictured it as vast and sculpted. So they could use the old Moria sets for that; or the Paths of the Dead. Trolls were a set in LotR, so that's easily redone to match the frozen dudes we have now. ummmm... I imagine they could use a modified Rivendell set(s) for Thranduil's rooms/halls, but his area is mostly described as cavernous, too. More modified Moria? Lake-town would be new. Beorn's. Eagle's eyrie. Goblin's front and back doors. Carrock... although I think where the Fellowship saw the crebain would work well for that! There must be other collections of boulders and different camera angles to change the pov for that spot... like outside Moria as they leave. We've already had a glimpse of Gollum's lake within the mountain in the prologue for FotR as well as Bilbo in the tunnel leading to the lake. I hope they revisit that for continuity. So, depending on the adaptation... we could visit some old haunts for The Hobbit. Film 2 is a different story. Could have Edoras, Minas Tirith, Osgiliath, Ithilien, Thranduil's realm, Lothlorien, Rivendell, Barad-dur, Minas Morgul, Hobbiton, Moria/Balin... probably not Fangorn, Helm's Deep, Westfold, Dwarrowdelf, PotD, etc. So many possibilities! *twitch*

For the Bridge and The Council

It remains my hope to see The Council at Lorien. If there are say, three meetings, we could see them at Rivendell, Lorien and Orthanc. I know that some were held at Rivendell. Silmarillion says it is so. Lorien is also south of Northern Mirkwood of course. And I think the last should be at Lothlorien, and this is why: I was reading through the official Weapons and Warfare guide of the film, in part because, as some here may already be aware, I had been pondering the nature of Balrogs extensively of late. I am all the more convinced, in light of long consideration, that the threat of a Balrog lead attack on Lorien had a very high probablity. The Film/film guides' take on things makes this all the more easy to work into the final arguments for an assault on Dol Guldur. According to the guide, and to the Fellowship film, the film makers already have assumed that The Wise were aware of the specific presence of A Balrog in Moria. I have said that a final convenening of the council, at which the council members gather at the Mirror of Galadriel, and share sight and thought, as on the hill near the end of ROTK in the text. Here they would see, as Frodo and Sam did, not only visions of the present and past, but visions of possible and probable futures. Thus. . . goblins and orcs gathering again in Gundabad. The Nazgul gathering once more. And for a cataclysmic final nightmare, an image of an assault on Lorien, with The Nine present, and helming the assault. . . A Balrog of Morgoth. At this point the presence of The Ring is still an unknown, to The Wise and To Sauron. Sauron was making plans that did not include the finding of the Ring, but that he meant to attack Lorien and Rivendell, we know already from The Tale of Years and from Unfinished Tales (also from The Silmarillion). Would such an assault have included The Balrog? Certainly if Sauron could have managed it. For logisitical and dramatic purposes, lets say absolutely. The Balrog commanded a power that even The Witch-King would not have possesed (despite that crap shot in extended ROTK, which only happened in the extended, and therefore did not really happen ). The Witch-King was unwilling to assail Lothlorien and its ring-wielding Queen, and certainly would not have done so before the Ring rested once more upon the finger of his master. But The Balrog? The Balrogs were, by all accounts, the mightiest of Melkor's servants, save Sauron himself. They are the nearest thing Sauron has to peers. The Valarauko, Power Demons, The Demons of Might, more powerful than any others in Melkor's service, more so than those who assailed Tilion when first he raised the moon, more so than those who stalked in foul impersonation of Orome when the Elves awoke, "Of All Elf-Banes most deadly, save The One who sits in The Dark Tower." With his old hatred if the elves, his sorcerous power, a match as we learn for the Wizardry of Gandalf the Gray, and astounding in its force, his history in leading assaults against entire armies of the High-Elves, who far exceeded The Sindar in all arms and sorcery, and an army of Wraiths, orcs, goblins, trolls, and werewolves at his command, he would not have feared to assault Lorien. Mighty as she was, Galadriel was not Melian. The Balrog was almost certainly present at the fall of Nagathrond and Gondolin, at the tearing down of The Great Lamps, and in the wars between The West and The North, Melkor and The other Valar at the beginning of days. Just as Gandalf feared the union of Sauron and a great Dragon (Smaug), it is hardly a great leap to assume that, knowing of the presence in Moria of A Balrog (as the film and its addenda asserts, even if the novels suggest differently) The Wise would greatly fear an attack on Rivendell or Lorien in which a Balrog took part, and preventing the union of the two mighty Umair, Sauron and Valarauko, would have been a mighty catalyst for action indeed.
"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!" "Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

there was a Balrog in Moria. It was right there in Saurman's book {Shadow and Flame}. I hadn't considered the threat of a Balrog attacking Lorien and, subsequently?, Rivendell! That's a fascinating concept that would be a wonderful threat to the Council for the film!
