Mebbe they'll do a flash forward with Ian Holm and Balin's visit to the Shire before going to Moria ... i'd like that!

At the end of the film seems unlikely. It would probably be rather confusing for the audience.

Mebbe they'll do a flash forward with Ian Holm and Balin's visit to the Shire before going to Moria ... i'd like that! There's a very clear sign he wont'be in Bofa film. In AUJ his appearance concludes with him leaving, carrying his book - the one we see in Fotr.

We only have to look at the beginning of FOTR

Put the prologue aside FOTR opens with old Bilbo starting his book chapter "Concerning Hobbits". Frodo is already gone to meet Gandalf (as we've seen in AUJ). If BOTFA should directly fade into FOTR then there's only the possibility of Bilbo saying the exact same words as he does at the opening of FOTR. Perhaps even starting his "Concerning Hobbits" chapter with the camera leaving Bag End and showing the Shire before fading into black starting Billy Boyds "Last Goodbye"... Oh dear... I already can feal the tears running down my face.

... I've assumed that in the end they're gonna show Frodo reading, then hearing a familar humming coming down the road - fade to black..

Except that that's not really where FOTR begins...

... so although it could work, it's unlikely it would actually happen. I do like the idea anyway

I'd like the last Hobbit movie to end with two scenes : 'old' Bilbo with his book looking outside his window and a certain Wizard's cart heading towards Bag-End.
From the makers of 'The Lord of the Rings' comes the sequel to Peter Jackson's Hobbit Trilogy - 'The War in the North, Part I : The Sword in the Tomb'.

I think it should end with Gandalf knocking on the door, (old) Bilbo going to open it and then you end with a shot inside Bag End with the door open and Bilbo and Gandalf chatting outside like in FOTR: "The End".
