Del Toro wants him involved in some way, so he's likely to be in it . . . in some way.

considered, but as much as I want him back, I think he is too old to play a younger Bilbo, and I'm not the only one to think so. Though here's floating around the idea of him as narrator. I think GDT will talk with Ian Holm; we don''t know if he wants to play Bilbo again at all. There are a few threads here about the topic already; look for them!
I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

he is too old as well. I loved him as Bilbo in LOTR but in 'The Hobbit' he is supposed to be 60 years younger. It has also been some years since he played Bilbo.

I think Ian Holm could be used in the second Hobbit movie but they should have a younger actor play him in the first movie .By the way this is my first posting. I've been a long time viewer of the TORN boards( since Two Towers )but have finally decided to join in on the anticipation of The Hobbit movie(s). I think DelToro will do a great job and I love what I'm hearing so far in regards to the Hobbit.

I can't even imagine any one else playing Bilbo other than Holm. Too old?, Bilbo is 60 years younger, but he is not 19 or anything. Plus, Ian Holm is a superb actor, and could easily pull off a younger Bilbo. I guess they could always get Orson Bean if they are stuck.

and I still like the idea of him as a narrator and getting someone younger to play the younger Bilbo. But this is my opinion.

Ian Holm knows. Several years back, he stated quite categorically in an interview that he would NOT be returning as Bilbo in any putative Hobbit movie. He said he was too old to be the lead in an action flick. I'm surprised this is the subject of such feverish speculation. TP.

to what can be accomplished by makeup -- it's a lot easier to make someone look older than younger. As for CGI, that would be horrendous Bilbo is not a bizarre, Gollum-like creature; the actor playing him needs to be able to act with his own face. What would even be the point of using Ian Holm if he were CGI'd?

Well he shouldn't of done such a stellar job at the role, if he didn't want us to think of him as the film Bilbo. I find it dissapointing he won't be Bilbo.
