Other than Gandalf, of course. As for Beorn, I am afraid, he might be a likely candidate for being cut out for the sake of "speeding up the story", much as The Old Wood, Tom Bombadil and the Barrow Downs were in FotR. Though, it would leave quite a whole in the Battle of Five Armies scene if he were, IMO. The Imp side of me is looking forward to some sort of confrontation with the Sackville Baggins as well. ;P

I'm not optimistic that this project will please me. There is slim possibility that GDT can meet the twin challenges: make the a Film One that realizes all the charms of the book The Hobbit AND bring it all back home in Film Two in a way that dovetails with Jackson's films in a way that makes it worth everyone's while. My hopes all come back to the portrayal of a single character Balin. If I hear that MAJOR talent is enlisted for that role. That Balin won't just be reduced to indistinguishable Dwarf #7. It would make me smile.

While I'm sure that some sections of The Hobbit will unfortunately have to be trimmed during the translation to the screen (simply because they may just not work when filmed), I can't see much major editing going on. The Hobbit is simply a much shorter book, with much less material to translate to film. LOTR, word for word is unfilmable. I don't think its the same case with The Hobbit. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing how the Dwarves (with the exception of Thorin) are used in the movie as I think it would be very easy for them to all blend into one. Conversely, I think it is going to be tough to make each of the dwarves an individual, rounded personality. I do hope that Gloin and Balin get significant focus in addition the main man Thorin.

I too am hoping for someone special to take the part of Balin. It doesn't have to be a "name" actor however - afterall look what happened to the chap who played Legolas!! Balin to me is important in The Hobbit - I wouldn't want him reduced to indistinguishable dwarf #7 either. But, I'm remaining optimistic - I think GDT has had a major rethink and now has the chance of a life time ...

It’d really be hard to watch the character development of orcs, trolls, and other bad guys; however, it'd be nice if they could show a bit more of the orc interactions rather than just fighting amongst themselves. There are a couple scenes I'm looking forward to seeing. I don't have a very good imagination, but there is one I really want to see at length. When Bilbo and the dwarves are captured and taken into the cave and placed before the Great Goblin, I don't simply want to see them herding the good guys down; screaming when they recognize the swords and then Gandalf comes to save the day. I'd like to see a bit more of them. Additionally, I'd like to see more elves and their lands. Too much character development will probably slow the movie down and confuse some viewers, but we've already had mostly men, a couple wizards and a couple hobbits portrayed. Let's see other races. Everyone wants to see Smaug the terrible. I'd like to see Bilbo screaming out "Attercop" to the spiders and hearing them discuss how to catch him. I'd love to see the three trolls fighting over how to consume the dwarves. Maybe showing other races will be easier in the second film so they can keep closer to the written version of the Hobbit in the first film. When I was a kid and while watching the animated Hobbit movie, I remember feeling a bit saved when the eagles arrived. The eagles will have two scenes in the new Hobbit movie. Maybe they can have a birds eye view of them flying down from there nests to save the company from the wargs and goblins. I guess the shot would be similar to Sauruman falling to his death or Gandalf falling towards the balrog. My top 5 hopefuls would be: 1) Orcs/goblins 2) Eagles 3) Dwarves, their army and their battle armor 4) Elves, notably Thranduil 5) Homes of different races like Moria (before desolation) and the Elven realm of Mirkwood where the dwarves are held captive.

I'm going to utter the heretical, especially for this forum: The Hobbit isn't high up there on my list of favorite books (though LOTR is my favorite of all time):. I recently had to re-read Hobbit since I only vaguely remembered the story, and I wanted to refresh my memory as to who the characters involved were. (But know that I am absolutely, positively PUMPED about these films being made!) The characters I am most interested in seeing fleshed out (other than Bilbo and Gandalf, which are givens) are Thorin and Smaug (at least in the first film). As someone else noted, Balin will also need to have some time as his later stroy figurfes into events in LoTR.

yeh, i think we agree. That's why is said major talent instead of major star :) I don't have reservations about the choice of GDT, after all alot of people were doubtful that the director of Brain Dead and the Frighteners could deliver a winning version of LOTR. But we seem to be asking for lightning to strike twice in the same spot. And whereas, Jackson had a wide open field of approach (relatively speaking). GDT seems to start from a very boxed in position between the studios and Jackson and so far i'm just getting a celbratory lap 'cashing in' vibe which does not bode well.
