I'm almost 100% there will be a little romance [In reply to] Can't Post

and I'm happy it won't be with Legolas.
I also think Tauriel is Itaril from the casting call and the casting call because all the description fits (Silvan elf, part of Thranduil's guard, having skills with bow...).

Elros in the Hobbit???? [In reply to] Can't Post

Has it really been confirmed that Elros will be appearing in these films? So that means Hugo Weaving will be playing Elrond's brother too then? The twin brother who chooses a mortal life. I thought that occured long before the events of the Hobbit?

I do not want what it is not mine.... I only want what comes from within....

Gandalf and Galadriel sittin' in a tree...

*removes tongue from cheek* bad tongue. bad!

but seriously, the only romantic love interest I would expect in the movie is between Bard and the mother of Bain, presumably Bard's wife during the events of the movie (part 2).

I'm rooting for a platonic friendship between Tauriel and Bilbo, something that gradually develops into an affectionate fondness founded upon mutual admiration and trust, maybe some unspoken chemistry, but not a romance.

That could be interesting! Something between Tauriel and Bilbo? I would have never thought of that! I will root for that idea tooSmile

Count me in for zero love interests. [In reply to] Can't Post

I want her and Bilbo to have a friendship, based on the grudging respect he earns by besting her and her fellow guards in the escape sequence, followed up with recognition at the Battle of Five Armies (perhaps one of them saving the other in a tight spot). I really don't see her getting paired off with a dwarf, even the amazing beardless one. Friendship, I hope, is the name of the game here, even and perhaps especially between male and female characters. I know we've been sniggering at the Galadriel and Gandalf interaction in the trailer, but I think (and hope!) that's platonic as well.

However, all that being said, I would be over the moon if she and Lindir somehow ended up together, pairing off the invented elves and making them a closed circuit. The warrior and the minstrel! How romantic.

I don't think [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't think it'll be Tauriel and Kili. They already did the Elf cross-species romance in Lord of the Rings. If they did it in the Hobbit, too, some viewers might start to wonder if Elves never fall in love with other Elves!

Ancient Themes [In reply to] Can't Post

The theme of winning a fairy bride is ancient, and repeats in Tolkien several times, with all three unions of the Eldar and the Edain, plus before them all when Thingol won Melian to himself.

One wonders what became of Legolas's mother.

…all eyes looked upon the ring; for he held it now aloft, and the green jewels gleamed there that the Noldor had devised in Valinor. For this ring was like to twin serpents, whose eyes were emeralds, and their heads met beneath a crown of golden flowers, that the one upheld and the other devoured; that was the badge of Finarfin and his house.

Call me bitter whatever but I wonder how would they have time for any romance in the Hobbit when they have sooooo much to do and bare. Let Tauriel be a helper you would feel sad seeing die, and not a distraction you wont be able to wait to see it gone.

Not to mention the thought of a dwarf-elf romance seems so awkward to me.

Not this again.

That's all I am saying about this character and the excuse that a nice looking female elf will have any romantic interludes with the principle players.

I am not singling out your post, romance isn't the end all and be all. And it shouldn't be...

A mainstream movie without a love plot? [In reply to] Can't Post

As I find a little weird the Kili/Tauriel idea, I disagree with the points here that she will not have any love interest. As the second female character in the film, I think she was placed there to develop the love story (subtle, brief, cross-races, whatever) of the franchise. We know Galadriel cant do it... or she can?

Oh, I believe Legolas/Tauriel is too easy... Maybe she is his sister or friend and she dies in battle and that event deepens Legolas' aversion to dwarves? I really hope he has a very short scene, and I hope he doesn't appear very into dwarves all of the sudden. That would be so OOC and inconsistent with LOTR.

unfortunately [In reply to] Can't Post

Legolas will be in a big chunk of the films from the way Orlando Bloom tells it. I mean a realistically he was filming some scenes in the second block and will be in NZ for the whole 3rd block of filming. which to me is way too much time for Legolas he shouldn't be anything more than a cameo in Mirkwood IMHO. I wasn't overly a fan of him in LOTR but he filled the character in alright, but just to have him all over in the hobbit is ridiculous. i could see a scene in Thranduil's halls maybe 30 seconds in the BO5A and no more than one or 2 lines tops but to write him into a major chunk of the story? God help us... Tolkien is probably rolling over in his grave

I can live with Tauriel somewhat as long as her character is well written and has no romantic interests at all

Legolas [In reply to] Can't Post

Although Tolkien did not mention it, that Thranduil's son and heir appears in The Hobbit is not unreasonable.
But the fact that he has too much screen time accentuates the risks that many new additions spoil the Legolas as we know it from LOTR.
What you say confirms me a little more than in The Hobbit will be revealed or developed the foundations of Legolas' hatred toward dwarves (beyond the traditional ones already given by his belonging to his kindred).
