Smaug's eye opening with a reddish glow shooting out of it Can't Post

I was a little disappointed when this did not happen in DOS but than when i saw how it looked if they did it i realized it wouldn't work. Unfortunately the movie going audience would probably wonder why a laser beam was coming out of his eye Frown it still looked cool when they showed the render in the EE but i can understand why PJ made the decision not to go that way. Some book to film sequences just don't work.

Yeah [In reply to] Can't Post

I think it's a good example of how occasionally something that works on paper just doesn't work on film. It also goes to show that, despite the many changes, they do also pay attention to the details of the books - only in this case it just didn't come out right on screen.

I understood why they removed it.. [In reply to] Can't Post

Also casual audience would probably think about the Eye of Sauron if Smaugs eyes shot out orange beams.. It was still cool to see how they used the glow for expressions in his eyes tough.

like butter scraped over too much bread.

It does, very subtly... [In reply to] Can't Post

Smaug's eyes glow a little, and when he first opens them you can see the coins are subtly illuminated by the light. It's a good decision to keep it subtle, when you remember the Eye in RotK already used that fog-light concept. We wouldn't want too many connections between the Eye and Smaug.

Smaug Is Perfect! [In reply to] Can't Post

I loved the documentaries on Smaug in the EE. they did a tremendous job on him even though we knew what he would look like beforehand he still took my breath away when he rose from the gold in the movie. that sequence was perfect almost straight from the book I don't think I breathed once during that sequence, I can only imagine what my nephews felt during that scene!

It is in the movie! [In reply to] Can't Post

As already mentioned, when Smaug opened his eyes in DOS you can see a gleam of red light coming out of it. Nice reminiscence to the book. Saw it in the theatre and in the Blu-Ray-Version (theatrical cut and EE). Strange so many people didn´t notice it.

its more like "light" than red light [In reply to] Can't Post

yes, you do see a shine coming out of his eye which illuminates the gold under his eye-lid but i was talking about the "red beam" which is seen in the DOS EE appendices.
