This is an excerpt from the official announcement of GDT directing from the official Hobbit blog:
"He will helm the two films back to back – telling the story of “The Hobbit,” and its sequel, which will deal with the 60-year period between “The Hobbit” and “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the first of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy."
Is it just me, or was there not all that much between the Hobbit and LotR?

Oh yeah, we've definitely discussed this already, but no harm done. I'm sure the discussion will continue until the day the 2nd movie opens, lol!  So, there's no harm in starting a new thread on it, you just may want to search old threads first to see what speculation has already occurred. We have a very robust search feature, accessible via the "Search Posts" ring icon at the top of each board. For example, I just searched on "Hobbit Sequel" and it returned over 200 posts!

So the sprequel will probably be about Aragorn's life, and his budding romance with Arwen. Great. My wife will love that. I might not mind myself. :-)

Yeah, i'm very excited (and definitely more intrigued) about the 2nd film. Hopefully, more Viggo!
Also, i've rejoined the forums since the announcement. A while ago, i had a username and password, different email and everything that i can't remember. I can't tell you how exciting it is to have new movies to look forward to, confirmed. I really miss those days from early in the decade, anticipating each new LotR movie. Can't wait to see some more of the cast announced. Hear tidbits of what may or may not make it into the film from the book. See those first pictures from the set. First trailer! It's all very exciting.
