Handheld camera action?
|
Can't Post
|

Hello, Good day. Is there any handheld camera action on the 1st Hobbit movie? Something I adored in the action scenes of the Lord of the Rings movies. Like they said, it feels better to move along with the action. Thank you very much!
There should be women, in the 3 upcoming movies! Period.

I can't think of any handheld action in LOTR to be honest. I believe shots like people running from the katapults and nazgul in Minas Tirith were done with steadycam (maybe an unbalanced one), but I'm not sure. Is it that kind of shot that you mean? Because in AUJ, the destruction of Dale has similar shots. :)

and one I particularly liked was the meeting of Eomer with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli. That documentary-like feel with having the cameras placed between the horses and the characters gives it a very dynamic and realistic feel. With The Hobbit, I can't think of any - unless some of the shots in Goblin-town when the dwarves are captured and in some of the fighting scenes. There's also a small shot when Yazneg enters Weathertop to meet Azog and he looks around the ring of Wargs. That is another hand-held shot. I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of any right now

Forgot all about that scene for some reason! Come to think of it, there were many other hand held shots. sorry, I guess I was focusing too much on those couple of Minas Tirith shots, that I assumed were not handheld because the implementation of miniatures and CG would be more difficult with a very shaky camera. But even that is just assumption. My bad!

In the appendices you can see handheld cameras all over the place

mainly in action scenes tho. Keep in mind that many Minas Tirith shots were not miniatures, everything from breaking the gates to the lowest level yard were sets.
Pessimists have no disappointments.

Would be harder in The Hobbit because of the scale I would think. Because you have scale issues with Bilbo, the Dwarves and Gandalf hand held is going to not be feasible to do. PJ had to use the whole slave motion set up to keep the scale and make it work.

In that vlog, we are told about the different camera setups they used to shoot on the films and one of them was handheld so I'm guessing they would use that only in certain types of shots: such as dwarf closeups or Bilbo solo moments - where scale isn't really an issue.

I agree. There were not as many situations where they could use a handheld although there may be some.

Again, thank you guys! Gawain, how do ya know the Destruction of Dale has similar shots? The 2nd movie hasn't come out. Dale's a city of people/men, I looked it up. And (just saying) that's a weird way to call a camera set up, "slave motion".
I can't wait for the romantic thing between Tauriel and Kili.

refers to two camera's set up and attached by a thether in between them. They move simultaneously in the same direction so that you have one actor of set of actors on one stage, the other set of actors on the other and it's filmed simultaneously with the actors having ear pieces to hear each other. The sets are scaled to the correct scale of each set of actors and then the two images are put together in the editing room.

Is there a hand-held size, or are they too big?

but interesting question. That would be a great question to ask SPJ in addition to the whole hand held thing in general.

itself is about the size of a tissue box, but when you add the lenses and rig etc it gets bigger. But very small camera as cameras go

to have it be both relatively new and so manageable then. Actually my son was on Xbox last night, but when I broached the topic today gave me quite the symposium on the cameras (note to self: if one has a teenage filmmaker in the house, ask him first.)

My biggest qualm about the first Hobbit film was the very un-organic look to it. I'm not saying it's bad, as such visuals are great in a movie like 300, etc, but it would have been nice to carry on that war movie/documentary look of the Rings series.

Thats how it feels to me as well, very unrealistic, u organic and set like... Even many of the few nature shots look strange, 3Ded, stale and uninspired.

I'm note sure if I agree with the nature shots, since they were still quite spectacular, but the infrequency of any form of location shooting was a bit disappointing.

two or three in the shire woods and beyond, the eagles flight, with the exception of the last mountaisn which were cgied there i think... Two or three ok shots in the over hill scene... But i dont remember anything outstanding ... It begs the question, if its really matters if the hobbit is filmed in NZ, now that jackson has " learned to trust the studio"?

A few others really impressed me, like when the company was walking over the mountain ranges after leaving Rivendell, but for the most part I must admit, I've doubted whether or not it was worth the hassle to film it in New Zealand, if most of it will be done in a studio. That being said, I am grateful for the real locations, fleeting as they were, because it did help it feel like a part of the same world as Rings.

Thing is even some of the real location shots, in the shire, the last shot of the home is now behind you speech, several of the shire frames, are all ruined due to the sintetic look that the colour grading does and the super HR digital look, imo. Those shire shots as the company leaves bywater really look straight out of narnia or some sugary land...nothing like the previous surrounding areas in Lotr. I dont suppose we will see many nature shots in DOS. Mostly studio now...
