Gandalf's speech

I've recently heard the full read for Gandalf's speech during Thorin's funeral and I'm torn as to whether I like it or not. On the one hand, I like that they get a eulogy, on the other, I think that perhaps it is a little sing-songy and maybe silence speaks louder than words. What do you think?

But after finally getting the funeral and thinking about it, it gave me a chance to think about the character on my own (which I have a HUGE attachment to -- both my husband and myself, and both book and movie versions). So, while it wasn't what I had initially hoped for, in some ways it worked better for me having that quiet moment to ponder things myself. My husband loved this version as well and was glad they did it that way.

silence gives you the chance to quietly mourn them along with the Company, without having to process any more dialogue at the same time. Good choice to go with the silence here, like with the Bilbo and Gandalf sitting together at Ravenhill, which originally had at least a page of them talking.

It was also super effectively used in 'RotK'

The silent exchange between Frodo and Sam while everyone's laughing and talking about his sickbed. And the silence between the four hobbits back in their little pub. Ah... good, silent stuff.
