Galion Can't Post

Reading a recent post about secondary characters cames to my mind the drunken elvf Galion.

If PJ and co would have trusted more the book to enrich the story with more bookish second characters Galion would have been perfect and memorable as a gag man like Alfrid.

How do you think he could have had improved the movie?

The same goes to Beorn (though I like him in the film, but the time filled by Legolas and Tauriel should have been used to hobbit book characters that are certainly interesting), and Roac

That's a fantastic idea [In reply to] Can't Post

I would've loved that, I think! It would flow right from his grumpy, drunken character in the book.

Roac could've also made a pretty good gag character, although I probably wouldn't have liked that as much because the crows are supposed to be venerable and all that.

Well, Tolkien distinguished between the ravens of Erebor and common crows (which did not speak Westron and were rude and insulting--according to the Dwarves, who could have been pulling Bilbo's leg).

Well, I don't think there's any question of them... [In reply to] Can't Post

... not trusting the book. They adapted the book - but listen to how respectfully they talk about it in the appendices.

I don't think an extended role for a drunken elf would have improved the film at all. I think it would have been horribly out of place. What would you have him do beyond what he does in the book and the film? He drinks too much wine and falls asleep letting Bilbo steal the keys. But Thranduil really doesn't need a drunken sidekick. Or any sidekick - the whole point of Thranduil in the film is his aloofness. The Master needed a character to play to and there isn't a named character in the book who could have taken that role. Galion has a specific role in the book which he also played in the film. After that, there's nothing else for him to do. And there's no one in the book who could play the role Legolas and Tauriel play in the film.

An Elven Foster Brooks? [In reply to] Can't Post

Personally I don't find drunk comedy that funny, but one can't argue with success of The Hangover trilogy.

Still, I'd be more interested in the expansion of the roles of the Elven friends that Gandalf meets in the Troillshaws, or at least the dwarves that The Company meets on the road through the hobbit-lands.

The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.”
