Since probably everyone now has seen the Hobbit BOFA EE. What is your favorite Middle Earth film and why? Is the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug The Battle of the Five Armies The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring The Lord o the Rings: The Two Towers The Return of the King What? No, very few people here have actually seen the EE, because people here like their traditional physical products... and it's only just now being released here in the U.S., with other territories to follow! All that said, here's my list: The Fellowship of the Ring The Return of the King The Two Towers/Desolation of Smaug (Towers just barely edges out Smaug for me) An Unexpected Journey Battle of the Five Armies
"It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer." - Samwise

All these are the EEs, since I don't bother with the TEs after seeing it in theater. AUJ DOS BOTFA TT ROTK FOTR Though I love all the Hobbit films. AUJ has the most dwarves and the most fun. FOTR is last place because it takes a very long time to get set up. It works for it and I wouldn't say I would change it, but the first 45 minutes feel very long. It doesn't really pick up for me until the Fellowship forms.

1)The Two Towers: The most complete film of the series with the introduction of the most interesting characters in the whole Middle Earth series. 2)The Fellowship of the Ring/The Desolation of Smaug: The definition of the great quest/fantasy films 3)The Battle of the Five Armies: An exciting fantasy war film 4)The Return of the King: The most ambitious and epic film of the series which has some of the best but some of the worst overall. 5)An Unexpected Journey: A solid beginning of a series with pacing issues and sometimes goofy tone. The exquisite unexpected party, Out of the Frying Pan, Riddles in the Dark sequences made it a worthy addition in the series.

1. The Two Towers (best of all middle earth films personally) 2. The Fellowship of the Ring (the one that started all of this) 3. The Battle of the Five Armies (personally the best of the hobbit trilogy) (great performances from the cast and a satisfying ending ,not a boring battle ) 4. The Return of the King (a masterpiece but way too long) 5. An Unexpected Journey (great introduction but a little too much humor) 6. Desolation of Smaug (no offense but a heartless film, that has no story you just go to place, to place, to place , , and we knew what the cliffhanger was because of 30 minutes of the Erebor sequence)

I was going to try to make a list, but realized I can't, any more than I could put the books in a particular order as "my favorite." But I recently watched all six films, and "The Two Towers" stands out as perhaps the best adaptation of difficult material. I was thinking about the way LotR was filmed, with everything happening "real time," and while I can't come up with a workable alternative to that, one of the joys of reading LotR for the first time is the sense you gradually get that there are Serious Things happening. It's suspenseful and intriguing.

1. Return of the King 2. Fellowship 3. Two Towers 4. An Unexpected Journey 5. Battle of the Five Armies 6. Desolation of Smaug Yeah... not a big fan of middle chapters it looks like. Even Empire Strikes Back, which is pretty clearly a more maturely-crafted film than either A New Hope or Return of the Jedi, is my least favorite of the original Star Wars... and Attack of the Clones is my least favorite of the sequels. And Lost World is my least favorite Jurassic Park movie. I need to watch the Godfather trilogy or Alien 3 to break this chain I guess.
