Doug Jones Can't Post

I just read Doug Jones will be in the Hobbit....sweet. I wonder how his mother is doing....she was my acting teacher in Fresno California way back....in 1990 - 1991...cool lady, got to meet Doug a few times as well, he was Mac the Nite at the time...he gave me a lot of good advice...which I never followed because I was a dumb kid... :)

Coolness! [In reply to] Can't Post

I love it when 'six degrees of separation' shrink to just one or two. :)

And welcome to TORN!

Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

Welcome rseppala!... :) [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah, cool beans about your close tie-ins with Doug and his mom. Perhaps you'd be interested in this thread over in the Hobbit Movie board.

Would love to hear some anecdotes about your experiences. :)

Cheers!

Welcome!! You come bearing a GREAT GIFT! :D Woohoo!! [In reply to] Can't Post

That means they're starting to seriously plant people in the casting!?

I'd love to see Doug Jones as Thranduil! I hope they don't hide him in prosthetics as a Dwarf. He's earned nothing worse than some point rubber ears after all the wonderful characters he's brought to film. What better way to show his talent than in The Hobbit! :D

Thanks again for the great news... and BIG TIME Welcome to TORn. I hope you stick around to join in the fun :)

Hi there! [In reply to] Can't Post

Ah, yes, the foolishness of youth - and the things we regret, "if we'd only known"! Wink

Welcome to TORn! I'd point you towards TORn 201, but you seem like a "de-lurker" who already know this place pretty well... Smile

The Jones Family [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I remember the 1st night class, and we all had to introduce ourselves on camera and tell a little story. So I was really nervous when I started talking, and Mrs. Jones was like, "Hey, where are you from?" and was like "Um....gulp. Detroit." and she goes, "I knew it, I knew it...I'm from Indiana!" LOL so we hit it off pretty good after that. If you don't know, Mac the Nite was part of an advertising campaign by McDonald's in the late 80's, and there was this very tall guy with a moon for a head and sunglasses who would sing that old mac the knife song...so I was floored when she said that was her son, then he came in one night. Coolest guy, real laid back, polite. I think he was at least 6' 2", he seemed like a giant to me, my meager stature only rising 5' 7" LOL

I remember him saying how hard it was for him to be cast, being so tall, and I had this thing about being short, and he was like, "most of Hollywood falls into 5' 5" - 5' 10 range", and kind of explained the camera tricks and boxes people stand on...lol I remember thinking "So, you're saying I still have a chance!"

Doug Jones Was "Mac the Nite"? [In reply to] Can't Post

That's blowing my mind! Talk about a checkered past...or is it just a storied career?

Oh yeah, I remember that commercial [In reply to] Can't Post

But wasn't it Mack the Knife?...No, wait, that was the original song; the commercial jingo went, "It's Mac tonight."

Anyway, I suppose we should all have figured GdT would find a way to slip his ol' pal Doug Jones into The Hobbit (It wouldn't take a very wide opening, would it? Wink). Any clue who (or what) he'll be playing?

I remember that!... :) [In reply to] Can't Post

Mickey-D's Mac d' Nite. :) Kinda funny the things you find out about famous people and the gigs they did in their early careers. Like Willard Scott being the first Ronald. I wonder who was the Hamburgler? ;P

I see Doug is listed at 192cm. And he's 48 ... older than I would have guessed.

Thanks for the story! It was fun. :)

Thranduil [In reply to] Can't Post

I think Doug is versatile enough to take on just about any role in the Hobbit. How about Beorn? Or the goblin king?

Maybe.... [In reply to] Can't Post

He will be the Great Goblin, an Elf, and another role. (hey, he's got 3 roles in HB2 doesn't he?) At least that's my take on it, after GDT's remark about the heavy makeup.

He is not only built like an Elf and tall enough for one of the Noldor, but he even *moves* like one as well.
Heck, with Abe Sapien, he already *is* an Elf in a way. Abe's graceful way of moving, the lyrical hand gestures, as well as his refined artistic tastes, love of classical literature, music, art, etc! Abe would be quite at home in the library of Rivendell.
As to which Elf he'd likely play, I would love to see him as Thranduil--he's got the chops, and the looks-- but that will go to a mainstream Hollywood actor I am afraid. Though he'd be great as Glorfindel!

Sunflower, you may be right [In reply to] Can't Post

MTV has posted this on its movie site:

"Doug Jones wants you to know that he would play a hemorrhoid in a Guillermo del Toro film if asked, that he would follow the visionary “Hellboy” director anywhere he chooses to go. Doug Jones also wants you to know that he hopes that includes “The Hobbit,” del Toro’s next project. Most of all, though, Doug Jones wants you to know that he isn’t officially cast in that movie, that there’s nothing on paper, that anything and everything could change, and that to state or otherwise imply otherwise would be premature at best and plain wrong at worst. And we wouldn’t dare go against any of these desires. Except, well, there’s one tiny thing more Doug Jones also wants you to know:

“There’s been lots of speculation. I wouldn’t want to ruin anything. Guillermo creates things with me in mind and he’s got a better image of what I can do than I do,” the man otherwise known as the Silver Surfer and Abe Sapien told MTV News, a wicked and knowing smile across his face. “However, there might be an elf king, father of Legolas kind of character that I would love.”

That would be King Thranduil, king of the Silvan elves in the northern part of Mirkwood, where Bilbo and his company of dwarves spent a large portion of their time towards the end of the novel. Known simply as the ElvenKing throughout “The Hobbit,” Thranduil gets into it pretty fiercely with Thorin over the Arkenstone, a fight that isn’t resolved until, well, until his son Legolas and Gloin’s son Gimli become friends during the events of “Lord of the Rings.”

Last year, we explored the possibility of Legolas appearing in “The Hobbit” with Orlando Bloom.
But for now Doug Jones wants you to know just one more thing.

“Guillermo definitely needs to make ‘The Hobbit,’ and he needs to make it right. So I want him to take his time on that,” Jones said. “But I also want him to bring me in on it. Are you listening Guillermo?”

Please, give us back Glorfindel!!!
