Dean O'Gorman (Fili) came in later than I realised!! Can't Post

Obviously I knew he had replaced Rob Kazinsky as Fili, but I thought they'd only done a couple of weeks of shooting. In the appendices they say it was '3 or 4 months' in! Even if they were including the Dwarf training it's still a heck of a long time into a production to recast.

No wonder we don't see Fili for extended periods of time throughout AUJ. So much of it had been shot before Dean was cast!

Does anyone know the real reason Rob Kazinsky had to leave? I don't believe it was for 'health reasons' for one moment, especially after seeing the appendices.

They don't mention him once and he was on the production for close to 4 months! If it was genuine health reasons they would have mentioned him and explained at least that they had to let him go. The other thing I think is that...they could have waited for Rob to come back. All the training he did and all those weeks of shooting. He WAS that character. They could have just shot with a double for a while and then done pickups with him later. It was coming to the end of the first block anyway. He obviously wasn't too ill because he was soon doing Pacific Rim for Guillermo del Toro.

It seems most likely that he was fired for some reason. I may be totally wrong but now we know he was on set for most of block 1 it doesn't make sense for him to leave the production after all that work.

Exactly. [In reply to] Can't Post

And he thanked the filmteam for the support afterwards.

We do not no anything else and apparently no harm was done to the schedule, and should therefore probably respect those private reasons and don't start groundless speculation. We all know that private reasons can mean a lot, but we certainly cannot judge.

True Blood [In reply to] Can't Post

I think it was because of family matters and because he started to work on True Blood!

" Why, O people of Noldor! Fëanor cried. Why should we longer serve the jealous Valar, who cannot keep us nor even their own realm secure from their enemy? And though he be now their foe, are not they and he of one kin? Vengence calls me hence, but even were it otherwise I would not dwell longer in the same land with the kin of my father's slayer and of the thief of treasure. Yet i am not the only valiant in this valiant people. And have ye not all lost your King? And what else have ye not lost, cooped here in a narrow land between the mountains and the sea? Here once was light, that the Valar begrudged to middle-earth, but now dark levels all. Shall we mourn here deedless forever, a shadow-folk, mist-haunting, dropping vain tears in the thankless sea? Or shall we return to our home? In cuiviènen sweet ran the waters under uncloaded stars, and wide lands lay about, where a free people might walk. There they lie still and await us who in out folly forsook them. Come away! Let the cowards keep this city!"

keep forgetting that... [In reply to] Can't Post

adore Kili but because the brothers are so close and Fili is the heir after all, being the oldest, it's been a tad frustrating not seeing more of Fili from time to time - and just odd. Love it when Fili walks down the table at Bag End and Dwalin is saying something to him about it. Really hope Fili has a bit more presence in DOS - it was DO shooting the barrel scenes, after all. And what happened to the scene in the grasslands where Fili is talking to Thorin behind the rocks? Was hoping that would be in EE version.

I had completely forgotten about that scene [In reply to] Can't Post

The Thorin Fili moment in the grasslands was the scene I was most looking forward to seeing in the EE. Maybe it was always meant for DoS. There are a couple of other things that I had expected too see that was cut.. Didn't PJ promis us a bit more of Kiran Shahs goblin skribe? And also some of the scene from the very first trailer during the goblin town chase has been left out. Unsure

they use that pic a lot! [In reply to] Can't Post

Funny thing is the Thorin/Fili image shows up fairly often for PR - it might have been a few seconds but I still wanted to see some direct interaction with Thorin and Fili - about the only time you see any bonding with those two is when Fili calls for him in the eagle sequence and looks so upset. Think the Thorin/Fili image was part of the warg chase in AUJ so don't think it will be in DOS - but wish they put it in EE version.

so frustrating to not see more of fili -- both because of the character's importance (thorin's nephew, also the next in line after thorin) and because of o'gorman's portrayal (which i love).

more fili, please. his absence (sometimes) is jarring.

.

aka. fili orc-enshield
+++++++++++++++++++
the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

Does anyone know [In reply to] Can't Post

If DeanO's ever commented on what it was like being brought into the production so late? Especially considering he missed boot camp. Did he get some one-on-one training time to get him up to fighting speed? It can't have been easy to pick up a character where another actor left off. But I agree with the other posters who want to see more of Fili -- Dean and Aidan work really well together but please give us more Fili in DOS, PJ!

We see him training in the appendices [In reply to] Can't Post

He did get some one-on-one training and had to learn how to use two swords, fast!

Interestingly enough, I have now seen the part where Peter says they lost Rob a week into shooting, which kind of contradicts the other comment elsewhere. I'm pretty sure you see glimpses of Rob in various scenes like the Rivendell entrance and Goblin Town, so how could he have only done a week's shooting?

I suppose at the end of the day none of it matters. Dean O'Gorman is an amazing Fili! I laughed watching the extras when he said even Aiden Turner would get mixed up and call him Kili sometimes!

He was hired in April, though I don't know when his first day on set was, [In reply to] Can't Post

But O'Gorman did say it was with Andy Serkis, and I believe it was filming the Troll Shaw fight. He said he was completely bewildered, but Andy helped by explaining things from an actor's perspective.

I've attempted to piece together the actual schedule - the cast showed up in January for a month of boot camp. They were supposed to start filming in February, but PJ got sick at the end of January and filming didn't start until March 21. The first two weeks were spent on Riddles in the Dark. So it seems that Kazinsky would have only been filming a couple of weeks, even though he'd been there almost four months.
