After seeing it twice: [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Quest for Erebor ** - There's a flashback during Thorin and Gandalf's conversation to the Battle of Azanulbizar (Battle of Moria as they refer to it in the film) from AUJ. It shows Thrain, Thorin's father, charging towards Azog after Thror's death and going out of Thorin's sight. He searches the dead bodies after the battle but finds no sign of him. There's also a brief discussion about the fate of Thror's ring (which he passed on to Thrain before the battle).

2. Queer Lodgings * - A completely new introduction to Beorn prior to the dinner scene. The Dwarves are all introduced and it's actually pretty funny in spots.

3. Gandalf and Beorn * - Before the company leave on the ponies, Gandalf and Beorn chat in private about the Necromancer and his connection to Azog. Beorn also mentions the dead being summoned from the High Fells, and there's a short flashback showing Men of the North burying The Witch-King in his tomb.

4. Mirkwood ** - Mirkwood is extended a bit to further show the delirium of the company in the forest. The main addition is the crossing of an enchanted river which puts Bombur to sleep (forcing the others to carry him). Also during this addition, a white stag shows up which Thorin shoots at but misses. Bilbo tells him this is bad luck but he scoffs at the idea.

5. The Master and Alfrid ** - Their introduction is extended at the end to show The Master eating actual Goat Bollocks while Alfrid agrees to a scheme to have Bard arrested.

6. The World of Men ** - There's an extended scene of the Dwarves sneaking into Laketown with Bard's help. The gaurds notice the dwarves and chase after them, but the company trips them and knocks them out. The townspeople play along while Bard distracts the Captain of the Gaurd allowing the Dwarves to sneak past. This is also where Thorin tells Bilbo that they are in "the world of men" per the trailer.

7. Prophecy of Hope * - The Master and Alfrid discuss the prophecy that the townspeople are talking about (the one that Bard repeats) prior to the Dwarves' arrest at the armory. Alfrid points out that these old prophecies give the people hope, and the Master listens intently to the idea.

8. Thrice Welcome ** - When the Dwarves are brought before the Master there's a short extension where Alfrid asks Thorin who can vouch for his character, not trusting his promises of shared wealth. Bilbo speaks up and gives a poignant defense of Thorin. This is actually my favorite addition.

9. Turned Away * - After Kili and the others are left behind they take him to the Master, who is walking into his mansion, and ask for help. He and Alfrid both turn the Dwarves down, leading to their asking of Bard for help after. This scene also features the Master's assertion that either "they will be rich or Smaug will dine on Dwarf for an evening" from the trailer.

10. Dol Guldur ** - Dol Guldur is massively extended to show Gandalf, after trying to undo the spell of concealment, running into and fighting a mad Thrain. He manages to get the upper hand and uses his magic to bring Thrain to his senses. There's a beatiful moment of reunion followed by Thrain remembering the Battle of Moria (there's another short flashback to show what happened). It's revealed that Azog took Thrain's ring (the last of the seven) by cutting off his finger. Gandalf then says they must leave and get Thrain out, but Thrain is too afraid and still under some sort of dark spell which gives him hallucinations. Gandalf tells him of Thorin going to reconquer Erebor, but Thrain is upset by this news. He says that Smaug and The One are in league and that Thorin should not enter the mountain. Finally we have Azog attacking Gandalf as in the TE, with Gandalf seeing the armies and managing a quick escape. Then you have Sauron showing up (like in the TE) but before facing off against Gandalf he pulls Thrain into his shadow and kills him. Just before this happens Thrain tells Gandalf to tell Thorin he loves him. Gandalf tell Thrain he can tell Thorin himself, but it's too late.

11. The Trush ** - The last extended scene is an extra few seconds of Balin talking to Bilbo on the way to Erebor (just before they see the ruins of Dale). Bilbo sees the Thrush fly by him and sit on a rock.

That's pretty much it.

The Grey Pilgrim, they once called me. Three hundred lives of men I walked this earth, and now I have no time...

With all the mention of the extra Lake-town stuff... [In reply to] Can't Post

...it's just struck me - do we not see how Bofur came to be passed out under the table from drinking? I think we all assumed there'd be a party scene of the Master entertaining the Company, and giving them the ill-fitting clothes before the send-off...

Another disheartening absence... [In reply to] Can't Post

together with

1-explanation of the behaviour of the Eagles
2-more Thranduil and a glimpse of the Feast of Starlight
3-explanation on how Smaug came to know the name Oeakenshield (though we might get it in the next film, I hope)

This EE seems to have the best additions and the most mind-boggling omissions so far.

Just because we assumed it [In reply to] Can't Post

doesn't mean that there should be a party scene when all the politics stuff are fleshed out in the other plenty new scenes of Laketown Wink

Ryan Gage is fantastic. One of the best actors of the whole EE.So theatrical in his expressions and the way he utters every single word is great.

Lake Town party and
A glimpse of the Feast of Starlight

I'm yet to watch the Appendices but As far as I'm aware there no actual proof either of these scenes even existed they just seem to have gathered some apocryphal status by the idea of them being repeated all the time.

The two reasons the Lake-town party was presumed to exist was 1) Bofur is under the table and separated from the group and 2) It was known there was a scene where the Master ate some testicles - it was presumed by many to be at some feast/party.

However we now know the Master's Bollock scene is a completely separate scene and there is also the already known story of how Bofur being with Fili, Kili and Oin is mainly due to a scheduling mess up involving James Nesbitt - Bofur was intended to go up to Erebor with the main group.

It may just be that after that mess up they wanted to give Bofur a valid reason to not go with the rest of the group within the story. Because Fili and Oin both had other legitimate reasons to stay, Brother and Doctor respectively.

There may have never been any intention to show the actual party. It may just be a convenient plot point to get keep Bofur in Lake-Town

As for the Feast of Starlight - now this this is one where I'm bit less confident - but I'm trying to rack my mind but I can't recall any news of there actually being some full Feast of Starlight scene, there may have been a bit more of Galion and the the other Elves in the Cellars drinking but I wonder if 'Feast of Starlight' bit was always meant to be a little more abstract and not actually seen?

Thrain saying smaug was in leagues with the one basically confirms he's being given information and we know sauron/necromancer and azog have been hunting thorin so his new title is certainly known to them.

How about Bilbo's "Never venture east!" [In reply to] Can't Post

Is it in? If not, I will be disappointed, and would much rather be disappointed today than when I view the film. If do know it's in, it won't change anything because I've already been waiting for it. But I just need to know please...

Thanks, *sigh* [In reply to] Can't Post

I just needed to know, and you confirmed my doubts about the scene. It's so sad that such a great little character scene would be cut. I really wanted to hear Bilbo's answer.

If you don't mind me questioning you (or any of you) further, without being to heavy on the spoilers: Did you find that there was anything in the EE that helped you fall more in love with the characters? Like Elrond and Bilbo in AUJ EE, or the like. Were there any new quiet and relaxed conversations between two or a few characters? (I'd really like Bilbo and Thorin as "friends" to actually TALK. Sly Anyway...anything like that at all?

Actually though, wasn't it an entire day? [In reply to] Can't Post

Balin: "Durin's day falls the morn after next."

Seemingly the next morning:
Balin: "We'll have to, if we are to reach the door by nightfall."

So morn after next became simply "next morn", and we never got to see the day in between. No biggy from a story-telling point of view, but I just have a gut feeling that such scenes were filmed.

I really liked Beorn,Alfrid and Thorin(due to Thrain'backstory) more.I cannot even compare the two Extended Editions.DOS is far ahead of AUJ imo.

Quite conversations:

1)Beorn and Gandalf

2)Dwarves and Beorn

3)Master and Alfrid

4)Thrain and Gandalf

5)Bilbo with Balin and Thorin

No, just double checked and no new shots there.

The runtime left to go in the movie is identical at the start the Inside Information chapter in both the TE and EE, so no changes from that point onwards.

Nice! Thanks everyone! Now, if only they fix the Eagles... [In reply to] Can't Post

we (sort of) know that scene was shot.
But I can see why it couldn't be added. "We need a burglair" line by Gandalf and then the cut to Bilbo is so strong and well done.
Whio knows..., maybe in the EE of BOTFA, Gandalf and Bilbo (Freeman) having a nice chat about the journey...

Re [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes. Every addition for Gandalf. Sure it improved our standing with Beorn and introduced Thrain, but frankly, Gandalf was the best served by these scenes even if they had the cool side-effect of bettering other characters, too, including Thorin by proxy.

Gandalf steals the show in this EE.
