William H. Macy / [In reply to] Can't Post

******************************************
The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.”

He's my pick [In reply to] Can't Post

I've liked Martin Freeman for the role since he was first suggested around here. I think he'd do very well in the role. I won't say he's perfect, but he's darn close (in my opinion, of course)!

By the way, welcome to the boards! Great to see so many new faces. Hope to see you around some more.

Here we go again... ;P [In reply to] Can't Post

Freeman is my pick too. But most of the lemmings* around here lately have been flinging themselves off the McAvoy cliff. <8P

There's one of these threads that seems to pop up every week or so. A quick keyword search should give you a good background on that topic -- and plenty of reading besides! I see you've already posted on the official casting speculation thread. :)

McAvoy would do a better job! [In reply to] Can't Post

McAvoy would be better, he's the stronger actor. Freeman only really done comedy before, the role of Bilbo is a serious one, not someone who makes people laugh.

I must disagree about... [In reply to] Can't Post

...the nature of Bilbo's role. It is actually quite humorous, in many parts and ways.

I can't fault McAvoy though. He is indeed a good actor, and would do a fine job if selected for it.

But what's all this then about discounting comedic acting as not being fully worthy of the craft? Practically every so-called "serious" actor I've ever seen interviewed when discussing doing comedy say it was one of the hardest things they ever had to do. Even Robin Williams can do serious roles if you tie his hands and feet down. :)

Or Tom Robins (Deagol) or Craig Parker (Haldir) [In reply to] Can't Post

Both GdT and Peter like to use old friends/cast members; so I've thought that Tom Robins who was in Peter's Forgotten Silver played Deagol (the Ring-finder) in RotK. There's also Craig Parker. I know there's a concern about using LotR players for Bilbo, but Parker is so good at assuming different looks, physicality and speech patterns, I think he could totally pull it off! He does a lot of voice-over work throughout LotR that you'd never guess was him. I also heard him do an AWESOME Gollum voice as he read Riddles in the Dark with Gil-galad (Mark Ferguson).

The Hobbit is not a comedy! [In reply to] Can't Post

The Hobbit is fantasy not comedy, and Bilbo's role in The Hobbit having read the book twice is certainly a serious role not a comical one, to say Bilbo's role is comical is quite laughable to be honest, no offense meant i respect your opinion. Bilbo did not crack one joke in the book and to make him comical would ruin the film. Just like in LOTR the role of Frodo was not comical and if it was it would of ruined the film. Jackson took exactly the right approach in adapting the character od Frodo onto the big screen, as i'm sure Del Toro will do with Bilbo.

It's not all serious... [In reply to] Can't Post

There's quite a bit of humour in The Hobbit, right from the start. Bilbo doesn't tell jokes, but he does get quite a bit of fun poked at him, one way and another. Actually, there's a bit of fun poked at Frodo, too, in the book, which PJ chose to omit. But he had the option of moving the humour onto the other hobbits, whereas Bilbo in The Hobbit needs to play the full range by himself since he's the only hobbit in the story.

James McAvoy can play humour well too, though. Have you seen him in Starter for Ten?

...and the sails were drawn up, and the wind blew,
and slowly the ship slipped away down the long grey firth;
and the light of the glass of Galadriel that Frodo bore
glimmered and was lost.

why not... [In reply to] Can't Post

i think he looks a bit like bilbo...if he act that good...i donīt know...but pj and gdt have to decide that..and donīt worry...lotr and panīs labyrinth are very serious films...so who could make hobbit better than them???
sure in the film...it have to be any scenes which make the film a bit brighter and humorous...but i donīt think that itīs gonna be a comedy!!???that makes no sense...

somebody here suggest "the monk" for bilbo...i think that is also a great idea,or??

I'm not suggesting it as a comedy, however... [In reply to] Can't Post

In the books for LOTR, was Bilbo that funny as he is in the movies? Is he more or less serious in the book "The Hobbit"?

I know this is not a comedic role, but does have comedic elements in it that should be met to keep with the same high standard that Ian Holm set, so I think that needs to come across in the new movie. Freeman in my opinion looks the part more than McAvoy, and has the comedic timing for that part of Bilbo's "movie" character personality that Holm portayed. As far as serious acting, don't count Freeman out. Though I've seen him in comedic type roles, he also has the diversity to play the serious role equally as well. In "Love Actually" he does both in the same character, and is extremely believable.

I think he's perfect for the part, especially under Del Toro's direction and Jackson's production.

I've read "The Hobbit" many more times than that... [In reply to] Can't Post

...somewhere in the double digets, in fact, and every time I find Bilbo sidesplittingly funny at the beginning of the story. In fact, I would go so far as to say that he starts out as a complete buffoon. He evolves through the course of the story into a serious hero, and I would not want that played down one bit, but at the start he's a joke, and the dwarves wonder why on earth Gandalf has saddled them with him.

Later, in "The Lord of the Rings," Frodo comments on Bilbo's habit of joking about serious matters. Since "The Hobbit" consists primarily of Bilbo's viewpoint, that comes out in the telling of it. I get the impression (taking the author's "conceit" that "The Hobbit" is based on something Bilbo wrote) that Bilbo got a good laugh at his earlier self in the telling of the tale.

Comedy is certainly not all of what "The Hobbit" is about, but it does factor into a sizeable chunk of it, much more than in "The Lord of the Rings."

Yeppers! And Welcome to TORn! [In reply to] Can't Post

I think he's got a great look for Bilbo, but we're also considering scale issues. If the LotR Hobbits were about 5'7" and were the perfect scale for John Rhys Davies' Gimli/Dwarf... it could stand to reason that they'd have the same inclination for this film. Then, however, the problem would be to find 13 six-foot plus gents to play the Dwarves in The Hobbit. The speculations are definitely flying around already!

I'm glad you found your way here in time to join in the debates, hopes and fears for these film projects. It's going to be awesome!

Bilbo-Martin Freeman [In reply to] Can't Post

I think he would be a natural choice and I can understand why he has been linked with the role, but it appears that the 'buzz' is around James McAvoy and I suspect he would be a more 'studio friendly' choice.
