Bifur's ax scene wasn't squirmworthy to me.

But I understand how it could be to some. I quite enjoyed that little Bofur family sequence and the moments it gave the characters.
While I'm not into gore, there was not enough added to the EE to put me off. And I kind of feel that is there are beheadings and stabbings and such, there should be blood because that's what happens.

I think it's the last "comic relief" shot before the big death scenes, and not nearly as annoying as Alfrid in a dress, or Gandalf & the dickey staff. Maybe I don't know what you mean by "squeamish?" Cringeworthy, perhaps? I didn't find anything in this movie particularly "squeamish," not saying I've got the strongest stomach or anything. This isn't anything like "Game of Thrones," which I think I would find terribly squeamish. Don't even get me started on that review of "The Witch" I read - I am NEVER going to see that movie!

I can see why some people might find it a bit squeamish, as in nausea-inducing? I was really wondering how they would handle it when I heard it was going to be put into the EE. This is a 3-inch+ blade in someone forehead, one that's been there for a long time and has healed over. The idea of it being forcefully taken out isn't a pleasant one. While they didn't graphically show it up close the moment it happens, it's the thought of what just happened that could get you. Or, like the OP specified, the moment where the orc is hanging over the cliff, and you know that has to be painful for Bifur.
But it worked as a great Ur family moment for me

I have not found the scene squeamish. To me, it was a fun and creative way to get the axe out of Bifur's head (even if a little too, I don't know - whimsical?  - to take place in the middle of a battle over life and death), and I'm always hoping for more dwarf-centric moments in the film so that was nice to see. I had also thought that the wound would have been healed around the axe a long time ago. But now reading this thread I got to thinking the way Bifur immediately gets back his ability to speak in Westron. That must mean the wound was fresh, after all - at least the part where it affected his linguistic skills - and apparently the neurons formed their old connections back in a flash as soon as the obstacle was removed. Overthinking or not, I'm not sure if the scene will make me squeamish in future viewings!

The idea this axe has been imbedded in his head for who knows how long, and is now being pulled out by force...OUCH! If the injury effected his speech, the axe would have to be deep enough to effect that part of his brain. I would also imagine over time the tissue, flesh, etc. had grown in around it. To me, pulling out this deeply imbedded axe is similar to pulling teeth that are set firm within the gum...again OUCH.
Cringeworthy aside, I may have enjoyed the scene more had there been a little more note given to the axe, other than here is a dwarf with an axe in his head. Nothing much, for example, a brief moment of - perhaps Bofur - explaining how his cousin was injured. Good it was removed (OUCH) and good the trio had this whimsical moment, but - IMO - it was the resolution to a plot that was never started in the first place.
