Best of the Appendices

One of my favorite parts of the EE's are the appendices. From the LOTR and now The Hobbit, the behind the scenes footage is often as entertaining as the films themselves. So, for those who have watched the BOTFA EE appendices what is your favorite part? Also, did you learn anything new? **Please avoid the topic about the lack of prep time. It's old news and has already been discussed on previous threads over the past few days. If you feel the need to discuss the lack of prep time, please visit one of those threads.** I have thoroughly enjoyed several moments from the appendices, but if I had to pick one it would be the Dwarves emerging from Erebor to join the battle. It's one of my favorite moments in the entire trilogy and it moves me every time I see it. To know how excited the Dwarf actors were to film that scene, how much that scene meant to them, just makes it all that much better. Probably one of the most interesting things I learned was that the chariot sequence was cut from the TE not because of cgi or that it warranted an R rating, but that it was too long. The sequence was actually included in the TE up until pretty much the last minute. However, PJ says they had to trim it back - and back some more - until it was trimmed so much it was pointless to include. Thus, PJ decided to cut it completely and saved the sequence for the EE in its entirety.

It was also that they did not have time to animate/visual effects everything that they wanted to for the battle, chariot included. They had to choose the priority scenes to finish. As for my fave bits, anything to do with the company dwarves, where it's not only about thorin/armitage

I love watching the cast have fun on set. Their real-life friendships are really touching to see, especially when they were filming their final scenes. Also, learning about all the details that go into the designs, even if we never actually see them.

But watching the odd clip (thanks TORn) and I suppose I will also love anything to do with the costumes and armor - and it makes me oddly happy to see what a huge set the interior of Erebor was . There's something heart-tugging about seeing an exhausted Peter Jackson sitting there. And I dunno about prep time - but seeing some of THAT footage - well, my respect for PJ increased even more, because the man is clearly tired, but driven - more than one cast and crew member has commented on PJ's long hours. Maybe a lot of us know what it's like to push ourselves re something - a paper, a deadline.....HANDLING a million details and being too tired to even rest or eat. Maybe staying up days at a time for tests and chugging down the caffeine to keep going. So I winced with empathy over that. *Grins* and I imagine any time Richard Armitage says anything or does anything will be a favorite. Still marvel at how these actors are giving such performances and a lot of times, there's nothing there! They are amazing.
Just fantastic costumes - amazing. I wish they would have an exhibition for these.

The 2nd half of the appendices has so much fascinating info and gorgeous examples of costumes and armor and Dale and Erebor and Dol Guldur, it's far and away my favorite stuff. But I also was very moved by watching how the death scenes were filmed. Even with commentary and green screen backgrounds, etc. it was very emotional and sad, thanks to those great actors. Looking forward to many repeat viewings of all the appendices and soaking up all the details.

I don't get to buy the blu ray until tuesday, but of what I've seen I love that Aidan and Dean finally hugged Yeah sue me. I've been hoping for that since the first movie :P Anything that lets me see Fili's main Botfa outfit. It's magnificent. The armor too!

--The special on Dain, in Appendices 12, The Peoples of Middle-earth: Dain. Billy Connolly is high-larious, and the story of the battle pig is beautiful. --Appendices 12, the Places (or realms?) of Middle-earth, on Dol Guldur, Dale, and Erebor. This is where all the great stuff about Alan Lee and John Howe is.

One of the best things I watched until now was how happy Martin Freeman was with having worked in TH. It really shocked me, he was REALLY moved by knowing that he had finished his last scene. And then the amazing, heartfelt moment when Graham McTavish is moved to tears while hugging him and MF just breaks down from the bottom of his heart. I was really really moved by those little moments, they showed how much they cared for each other and they got to know each other and enjoyed working together. Another great treat was to see how COMMITTED Lee Pace was to his role, to the point that he wanted to make ALL his all stunts and learned to fight like a true Elf, imo! Amazing job, character and I'm overall very satisfied with his work and love for his character. Lastly, something that was mentioned in a post some days ago but the person that mentioned it didn't gave the whole picture to the matter, was the part when Peter Jackson acknowledges that Ian McKellen's love for the book was "a great benefit to us all". That wasn't mentioned, from what I recall, in the post that mentioned how Peter rolled his eyes when talking about that –which again, I think that statement was not true, because I saw the video and didn't get that feeling. It is true that they start laughing when they see Ian coming with the book in his hand –which he is doing with intent and it's really funny –, but anyway the phrase "It was a benefit to us all" changes a lot the perspective some have argued about Peter hating The Hobbit book. It shows that he did care and was not mocking Ian, which I was relieved to see.
"Is it not a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt for so small a thing? So small a thing! And I have seen it only for an instant in the house of Elrond! Could I not have a sight of it again?"

Because that pic looks like soft suede with studs on Fili *snuggle* . I bet he smells good too - like MANLY LEATHER . (Now someone is going to point out that everyone probably smelled pretty ripe because of the multiple layers and hot lights, but I REFUSE to believe it. The dwarves all smell like sugar cookies baking. )
PS. Hope everyone who has waited for so long, 'round the world, will finally get those disks next week.
