Yes, just more stuff of him taking on orcs. Maybe 20-30 seconds worth

20-30 seconds is generous. It's probably closer to 15 seconds of new footage. Really disappointing.

I had heard rumors from someone with a source in the production that said the Ravenhill battle was shot much different that what ended up on screen. You can seen evidence in the production diaries that show a much larger conflict with armies of elves, men and orcs fighting amongst the ruins. It's likely here that we would see Thranduil not "leave the battle" as he planned. Perhaps this is where the "How shall this day end" scene would have been. Who knows. Hopefully the appendices provide insight.

I guess in the end while editing PJ liked this version of it and didn't want to change it. I would have liked to have seen the Dwalin stuff that McTavish hinted at pretty heavily. I think showing some of the other characters when the battle was wrapping up would have been nice. The ending doesn't satisfy any of the conflict set up in the first half.

15 seconds of Beorn... [In reply to] Can't Post

That makes it 20 seconds combined for the whole movie, in the EXTENDED edition! Thank you PJ, at least we got Legolas on a bat and Alfrid catapulted in the Troll's mouth, because that's more important! Pirate

for three seconds. I audibly gasped when I realized how abrupt the funeral ended. They cut out a speech from Gandalf that we know was filmed because McTavish and Kircher confirmed it was shot. And it ends with a very short shot of Dain nodding. Giving him a line or something would have helped the transition. The 3 second shot of Radgast, Gandalf and Beorn is hardly enough to give them visual closure. But I guess I was foolish to expect a little more.
