Balin's Axe Can't Post

So in FotR, Gimli picks up that big battle axe in Balin's Tomb while the fellowship is in Moria, right? So when we get a photo of Balin down the line, do you think he'll be weilding the same axe? I think that would be an awesome subtle connection between the films. Plus, I want to see big axes.

That's interesting... [In reply to] Can't Post

I hadn't picked up on the Gimli picking up the battleaxe in Balin's tomb thing. I guess I assumed he'd just had it all along.

I hope [In reply to] Can't Post

they use the same axe. It would add a special connection to LOTR.

All you have to decide is what to do with the time that has been given to you...

I believe if you actually trace it back [In reply to] Can't Post

It's Durin's Axe that Balin found when reclaiming Khazad-dum, so no, he shouldn't be wielding it during The Hobbit, but then given how revered an heirloom it is, Gimli probably shouldn't have been wielding it either. If we assume 'film canon' that Gimli retrieved it from Balin's Tomb and that the axe Balin was buried with was Durin's (i'm not sure if Tolkien specifies he was buried with an axe, let alone Durin's but lets assume that is the likely course given that Balin was buried with full and final ceremony as King of Moria) then Gimli would likely have returned it to the closest members of Durin's line back in Erebor. It isn't quite his to wieldSmile.

Defiantly the same Axe [In reply to] Can't Post

Looking at the Axe pictured, its simple enough to spot the same distinctive spike at the top and the two holes in the blade.

Different Axe [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm thinking of the bigger, double-bladed axe.
