Don't know if anyone else noticed this, but Bain's voice sounds so much younger in this film (in the beginning anyway) it's weird... I know it's because these scenes were probably filmed before the 3 film decision, and then the Bain actor came back for pick ups and was older and as tall as Luke Evans, as I remember in the behind the scenes. Just think they should've had him ADR his voice over the parts to be consistent with his voice in DOS.

I thought the same thing while watching the movie, but I suppose it's not that disturbing.

.. but it doesn't seem much of a problem to me. Some boys' voices do come and go a bit when they break. Main thing is, it's the same boy and the same voice, with a different pitch. My guess would be that (if it's the dragon scene) where Bain sounds young that was left in deliberately, because the emotional hook there is stronger if the boy is younger. They did the same thing in Two Towers in the scene before the battle where Aragorn talks to the boy Haleth. The actor was Philippa Boyens' son and she remarks in the commentary that his voice had broken during the filming and they got a younger boy to do the voice-over. I wouldn't mind betting that was because the conversation is more powerful if Aragorn is talking to a boy rather than a young man.

Didn't really bother me though. It was just kind of jarring at first.

In his first shot in the film where he exchanges a line with Tauriel I actually thought it was an entirely different actor because the appearance and voice are so different from the Bain in DOS. It didn't even occur to me it would be the same actor, having been filmed much earlier. Thanks for clearing up that mystery!

Peter Jackson seems to have a general problem ...

... with accepting the fact that people get older and don't stay the same physically (also see Elijah Wood, Ian Holm and Orlando Bloom)

...of certain audience members. Jackson does not think this natural phenomenon matters more than casting the right people, and keeping them. I can tell Frodo, old Bilbo, Gandalf, and Legolas are all older than LotR, but I was happy to see them back as their selves. Bain, I did not even notice.

...would rather see the same actors back (with a bit of makeup or Cg or something) ten years later, accept (or suspend disbelief) the fact of their aging somewhat, than have different actors. Thought they were all just wonderful.

... the cameos of the old Bilbo and Frodo were pretty irrelevant and should rather have been saved for the SEE if anything, while Bain's role was important to the story or Smaug would be still flying around.

I liked him, and the actor who played him. I did not, however, notice that his voice changed, or that he grew/shrank 6 inches. He was, to me, recognizably himself throughout the two films in which he appeared. It's a risk of casting a male in that age range...
