A Dwarven Regiment should be a dreadful thing. Slow, ponderous, marching to the beat of bass drums or horns (or perhaps dwarven war-kazoos). The front should be like iron, with anti-incindery war masks and locked shields. It should grasp the earth like two gravities and be like a wave of stone. It might discharge missile weapons, a volley of short throwing axes like the germanic Franks when the enemy is about 40 feet away. But it does not stop and accept an assault...even if enemies attack it aways makes an assault itself at the last minute. The shields part..the axe-dwarves emerge and attack with fury. Axe fighting must be so, it is not a defensive weapon.

How I would love to see Dain's army rumble up to the Lonely Mountain the way you describe! With their long-distance missile weapons, I always thought of the Elves as kind of like an air strike. And Men, of course, would be the infantry (and cavalry). But the Dwarves ... they should be like a tank division. Not fast or elegant, but devastating. Heavily armored and powerful. And in the heat of battle, they should be absolute last thing you want to see come rumbling over the hill toward your position! I always found the LOTR trilogy to be far too heavily weighted toward the Elves and Men. But with these new films on the horizon, maybe we finally have a chance to see the Dwarves truly shine. I'd love to get a look at their culture, their cities and especially their battle prowess. Like the Spartans in 300 ... it would be tremendous if they fought as a unit as you describe ... with power and discipline. Like a relentless and terrible iron machine!

I've had similar ideas for a while, especially with regards to the Francisca throwing action. I think they should not just use axes but also warhammers, mattocks and maybe short swords. And I like the way Games Workshop designed some of them in Anglo-Saxon style full-face masks, I'd like to see that utilized in The Hobbit also.

But the Dwarves ... they should be like a tank division.....maybe we finally have a chance to see the Dwarves truly shine. Yes ! its one of the few unexplored armies. One of my favorite moments in all Middle-Earth is when the Dwarves fought Glarung successfully till he gave way, and then literally walked off the battlefield carrying their slain king signing their funeral dirge. This was during one of the worst defeats the free peoples ever had and none dared hinder them.

Excellent! That's what the dwarves should be like! ***Tony Wolfe, the guy that designed the "cultural fighting styles" for the movies, said they actually never developed a "dwarf fighting style" because we don't see large Dwarf armies; Gimli's the only one we saw and they just developed a personal fighting style for him. But yes, the Elves seem to optimize ranged attacks and mobility/flexibility. The Dwarves are all about raw power, optimizing power and durability at the expense of mobility. Arguably the strongest close-quarters battle fighters in Middle-earth, good guys or bad guys. Dwarves are smaller than Men but they're stronger....in ADDITION to being disproportionately stronger. But due to their stockiness they can only exert their strength well at close range: that makes the battle-axe the perfect weapon. These guys can easily cleave an enemy in half in a single axe-swing.

There are quite a few axe fighters, but nearly all (maybe all but one) use it with both hands. This fellar's got an interesting shield (not the usual Kite shaped) and must have it on some kind of strap. Ug, I just noticed the guy going helmet first into the ground took an arrow in the mouth. That couldn't have tasted very good.

I always thought that it would've been awesome to see a batallion of Dwarves at the slopes of Mount Doom in FOTR's movie, fighting side by side with Elves and Men in the War of the Last Alliance, as the book said they did. It will be great to see this in The Hobbit!

We really need to see more dwarvish fighting style, and now when Hobbit is happening, I really hope that's what we get, not just making dwarfs for comical relief and elves shining like heroes. I too hope they use similar throwing axes as Franks used, fransiska axe was one of the deadliest weapons of that time. If you were strong and skilled enough, you we're able to throw those almost as far as you could shot arrows( ok not that far but nevertheless) and eventhough the blade part didn't hit enemy, it would hurt and confuse enough that thrower can run on chop enemys head off.
