Don't understand it.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Guess Fathom events was really determined and probably paid quite a lot for the privilege, or maybe WB approached Fathom in the U.S. and U.S. fans are being "used" as some sort of test prediction for how much advertising will be needed for the EE release -

as, re your request, the resulting online chatter and probably illegal leaked bad phone images are just free marketing.

Anyway, even being in the U.S., it's a bummer that this wasn't a global event, and IMO wrong w. such a dedicated worldwide fan community. And yes, planning to go, and yes, planning to post. Folks did it for others re the EEs, tho IMO getting fed immediate info from the downloaders at the time was much more fun and felt more SHARING.

One thing tho - I believe there will be an official EE trailer and after this viewing - and security re the EE has been SO tight - IMO not much reason to hold back a trailer for the EE. Because everyone who wants to know what the new footage is will.Unimpressed

Hmm [In reply to] Can't Post

The weird thing about your theory of using the US audience as a test to see how much advertising they need is that the digital release of the EE is one week after. I don't think that's enough time to pull together all the audience reactions and create a campaign for it.

Now the physical disc copy comes out a month after, so that's enough time there.

And yeah, anytime who wants to know what the new footage is and how good it is will know almost instantly after those going get done watching.

Tho maybe I am not being paranoid, after reading about these data mining companies that track my every expenditure and companies following me from website to website with helpful shopping images and all these sites that would love to know my location, even tho IMO it's none of their *____________* business where I happen to be.Mad

So, I figure, somewhere, someone at WB is looking at the subsequent online chatter - tho as you say, it may not change anythingUnsure. I imagine re BOFA, WB has pretty much made the bulk of its disk and download sales, and everything else is just more for the coffers. They certainly haven't expended much effort so far.Unimpressed

Maybe the online chatter "info" is fed into whoever decides how much air time to purchase for showings of an EE trailer, or which web sites get a clip. And yeah, I do think folks look at that kind of thing. Because it helps, potentially, in making money. Especially with the holiday shopping season coming up.

And, with the EE coming up soon, maybe we will finally get a few more interviews from PJ or the cast. Perhaps.

They won't know how good it is.... [In reply to] Can't Post

... until they've seen it for themselves.

Which is why I won't be visiting The Hobbit forum (if I can bear to stay away) from Tuesday until the UK release of the EE disks on 23 November. The last thing I want to hear is how good (or bad) other people think it is!

Will the UK not get the digital release the week after the theater showing? Just curious, if you can't want until Nov 23.

I'm a physical disc person too. They shall not take my physical video games and movies from me easily Tongue

Means, motive, and opportunity [In reply to] Can't Post

Dormouse, re an earlier thread - think you are completely correct about the joy of seeing an *unspoiled* film for the first time. I'm glad I saw DOS and BOFA that way (and also glad when the self-imposed embargo ends, because I cut myself off from news sites, social media sites - anyplace I thought someone might spoil - even w. just a title.)

Personally I guess I am just weakTongueTongueTongue and I got to thinking and then I found a theater that would work and just couldn't deal with the curiosityEvil, and as another poster mentioned it's hard cutting yourself off, and I'd really rather just watch for myself - but the only way to do THAT is to actually go.Crazy Since I have the opportunity, when I thought I wouldn't - don't know at this point what I would have done - don't think I could stand quarantining myself again *sigh*. Maybe I would have felt differently if there had at least been some 'wee leaked stills or interviews - anything - but this EE seems to be in complete news lockdown for now, and as we know, has been for months.

Guess your fans will just have to follow you around TORn for a while.Cool Certainly your posts will be missedFrown, and those others that quarantine themselves.Frown

I can wait because I'll have to! [In reply to] Can't Post

I suppose we do get the digital release but I've never downloaded a film and don't know if my internet connection would stand it. And although it would be good to see it as soon as possible, it would make the arrival of the disks a bit of an anti-climax, wouldn't it... I curse them for staggering the releases like this, it's so messy and ruins the conversations we might have. but there you go - nothing I can do about it.

If I had access to a cinema showing it, I'd go... [In reply to] Can't Post

If I could be certain sure that people in here who see it tomorrow and come back wanting to discuss it would avoid putting spoilers in their post titles I wouldn't bother so much about staying away. It seems such a shame that they create all these differeint release dates because it ruins the conversations we might have about it. Even our DVD/ Blu-ray release has been put back another week, from 16 to 23 November - by the time we see it folk who see it tomorrow will be tired of talking about it. But there you go...

As for the rest, the mouse says thanks, and passes you a cup of tea Smile

IMO TORn posters are pretty courteous, but unless a title is JUST "EE spoiler" in my experience - you can't be sureUnsure. But since we are a community - well, LOL, U.S. citizens have been stereotyped as "boisterous" among other things, but I'd imagine anyone seeing this EE - or at least I would hope - is feeling empathy about the situation, and will be extra cautious about using a "spoiler" tag.

I know I don't feel good about the situationFrownFrownFrown. I've got all those images of happy fans lined up for premiers and you can just read old posts for the excitement and chatter, and that's just TORn. I can't read other languages but I imagine ME boards around the world are the same - fandom COMMUNITY! It's bad enough w. the digital releases being so early vs. the disks - all of this I guess is about money, and how to get the most, but it's fans that the companies get money FROMMad - so this last time, I wish the fan community had been taken better care of.

Having an EE showing or two in other countries - especially Tolkien's own country - I think would have been more appropriate.

But I think folks will be thereSmile! Sounds as tho there is a LOT of Appendices material, so there will be a lot to discuss - also, for myself - a disk person - I do a lot of re-watching. IMO you just can't absorb everything in PJ's Middle Earth in one viewing, or even two, with all the lush details he addsHeart. And IMO we will need you back soonest *grins* for your reasonable, balanced, thoughtful posts re this EE.CoolCoolCool

I was a bit surprised that not even New Zealand got this special event.

But yeah, I don't think people here will get tired of talking about BOFA EE by Nov 23. We're still talking about stuff from the 1st and 2nd ones.

And I am definitely looking forward to the Appendices. I've watched the other two multiple times. I just love seeing all the production stuff.

For me, re Smaug and Beorn - I just loved when they brought academics in to comment on what may have influenced Tolkien's thoughts - it's the Hobbit movies that got me to download more mythology and folkore books to read.HeartHeartHeart

I've taken the digital release date for the EEs off every year for the past two years, and this year will be no different. I'm fortunate enough to be able to take as much time off as I want, as long as my clients are happy. Looking forward to spending the whole day watching those appendices, and probably watching the EE for a second time since I'll have seen it already thanks to tomorrow's screening. By the time the Blu-ray gets here, I'll probably have seen it 4-5 times... unless it's terrible (fingers crossed...)
