I know all this awesome news about the EE's has been going on, but I just have to ask is Alfrid's death bloody?

Silly, yes. Bloody, no. [In reply to] Can't Post

Alfrid's demise isn't bloody or gory or hardly even nasty; but it is dramatic, silly, and ironic. Very befitting.

Best part is [In reply to] Can't Post

the scene is mercifully short. I didn't want a whole lot of Alfrid, and that was the only extra scene. He served a purpose, heheEvil

Could've done without it [In reply to] Can't Post

I prefer the vaguesness of him just running off with the dressful of gold. But the non-Alfrid part of the scene was funny Laugh

Completely agree [In reply to] Can't Post

The first part of it is funny and a nice tie-back to an earlier scene - I think Ryan Gage has a good expression (kind of rueful) but the actual second part is a waste of timeUnimpressed. It's meaningless and IMO it would have been better to have had Alfrid run off in his dress.

At least it's short.Unimpressed No it's not bloody, but it's sort of very mildly gross, reminded me of some pictures I see on nature shows re certain ways of feeding by certain animals. Probably where the idea came from.

coudl've been worse [In reply to] Can't Post

The Chronicles book discussed a bloodier/more gruesome end, though by the same method. Glad they didn't go that far with it.

not bloody (spoilers, obviously) [In reply to] Can't Post

but incredibly stupid Crazy

Out of all the Middle-earth EE's, there are two scenes that, IMHO, should have stayed out. The Goblin King's song (sorry, professor, but it sounded far too much like a rock song), and Alfrid's demise, which was just stupid.

I will, however, mention that the imagery at the very end of it was a good tie in to the overall theme of the film. However, I still think it could have (and should have) been left out. At least, it's the only extra scene with him in it, which was merciful as I think he had too much screentime at the expense of others already.

I thought it was as hamfisted as it gets [In reply to] Can't Post

The fact that a gold coin is literally the mechanism by which Alfrid meets his end is just so forced. It was also a let down that Gandalf was not able to use Radagast's staff as more than a blunt force weapon.

Btw, what the hell was he doing hiding in the pouch of an active trebuchet? Not even Alfrid could be that stupid.

I think the dumb scene was set up just to illustrate "greed" as if we don't know that is a [In reply to] Can't Post

major theme already. It makes no sense at all....of all of the places to hide he somehow climbs up into a loaded sling....and then...full symbolism moment......one coin falls......

I just wish somebody had the courage to tell PJ ..NO, this is a bad idea.

This exactly... [In reply to] Can't Post

PJ has become George Lucas in the sense no one tells him NO! to his bad ideas. It's okay to have bad ideas, he's full of so many great ones, but it's sad there's no one there with the power to gently tap him on the shoulder and say "this idea not working."

The fact that this scene was favored over the Acorn scene or the "Everything I did, I did for them" scenes is a travesty. It just shows how misplaced PJ's priorities have become. Such a shame to see a talent like that become so disjointed.

Agreed... [In reply to] Can't Post

I envisioned a far creepier end for Alfrid that would have reflected the original fate of the Master of Lake-town, who met his death in the Long Marshes making off with gold intended for the refounding of Esgaroth. Although my notion involved a final cameo with Gollum.

Whew! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm glad it's not bloody! (I can deal with blood, but the way the Hobbit Chronicles was describing it was extremely gross!) And I'm sure it is stupid. I expect that from a character like Alfrid.Wink

Well... [In reply to] Can't Post

there is gross and bloody in the film, just not with Alfrid. The dwarf chariot chase scene features most of the gore.

Hard to be after watching and loving Starz's Spartacus show Tongue

But anyway, it's not the same level of blood/graphic violence we saw in the other five films. Battles were pretty bloodless, compared to this. This was more in your face and obvious. Maybe not R-level to your personal opinion, but its certainly not expected, going by the other films use of blood and violence. Somehow, the impacts of the Oliphants stepping on the horses seem less than the impacts of the dwarf army getting crushed by troll clubs. Here it lingers on those shots. Maybe its also the sound design here at work too. It sounds nastier and more gruesome. I flinched when the whirly thing took out a section of elves because of the sound it made on impact.

The tone of this battle just felt more brutal and real than the others.

Perhaps. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's a deal for me, and some other people. Heads being pulped is R-level in my opinion.

agree [In reply to] Can't Post

I would rate it R too. Stabbings and bloodless beheadings are fine for PG13, but once you get into the blood spurting and heads and limbs being crushed and pulped...

Before the movie, I was thinking "what did they do that could be any worse than some of the stuff in ROTK?" Then I saw it "oh, that's why. Yep." Doesn't bother me, but I would say it's R
