I believe the best date we have for The Hobbit is December 2011. Obviously we won't have the exact date for a couple of years.
Film 2, also called the bridge film by some, though GDT dislikes that name, is probably going to be one or more stories from the appendices of ROTK. It will be a movie taken from Tolkien's work that is neither the Hobbit or LOTR. Something that will go in between the two movies to "bridge" that gap of 60 years between the two. What exactly will be in that film, we have no idea, though theories abound and I'm sure a quick search of the boards will get you some of those ideas.

There has been lots of talk on the boards lately concerning the 2 films. One of our posters has been Guillermo del Toro himself! The last update is that they are working on the script now, and are planning the release of 'The Hobbit' in 2011, with the second film the following year. From what we've heard, it sounds like this will be a "bridge" film that will show the events that took place between 'The Hobbit' and 'The Fellowship of the Ring'.
