Strider vs Trotter Can't Post

I am drawing again, and LOTR fan art is coming out of it- and an original here, too :D Life drawing class definitely helped a bit, but as it says in the description, I am always looking for const. crit., especially concerning lighting and anatomy.

NARF since age 8, when I refused to read the Hobbit because the cover looked boring and icky.

Great concept! [In reply to] Can't Post

Nice blend of style. Trotter reminds me of a Peanuts character. Laugh

Excellent job Ainu Laire! Smile

Strider and Trotter.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Coolvery cool, the Hobbit does rather look like a Peanuts character (Smile), or is it that Peanuts look like Hobbits??? Great expressions. I particularly like Strider's face, and the hair that looks like he actually was travelling through the wilderness. Nice pencilling/textures/shadows.

Ah yes, I have just spent the morning stewing over the TV, the laptop and other reference (now wheretheheck did I put that pic of Alan Rickman??!!???) for an illo I'm doing... reference is my friend... and hard to find, especially if you can't shanghai a family member, or none of them look anything like your characters. I've actually set the digital camera up on a tripod, put on something like costuming (it doesn't have to be perfect; you're using it for the fall and wrinkle of the cloth), put it on timer, and run in front to assume a pose which often half falls offscreen. The cheesy Captain Jack pirate sword came in handy a few times. This works even if you are a middle aged woman of average build doing a lean, lithe twenty something male... (snort!). You can modify the build of your reference. Ahem, chest wraps are useful. Bodybuilding books, martial arts mags, and other sports mags are useful for anatomy and action. And DVDs.

Practicing in a sketchbook (from reference) is also wonderful: it trains the hand so you can often draw more from your imagination.

Keep drawing, keep drawing, keep drawing.

Go outside and play...
