One Ornament to rule the tree...
|
Can't Post
|
|
What perfect timing--I've been puttering around with these for almost a year now, trying to get them just right, and lo and behold, TORn posts this notice of a Fanart board right when they're ready...
I have a Darth Vader glass ornament that I bought last year, but other than that I've never seen any other black Xmas ornaments. Hee hee hee. They'd be perfect on a Halloween tree, though. I make these funny little trivets, too--they're stoneware, which makes them very hard and very temperature-tolerant. They make great coasters, because the top (design) surface is not glazed--so they tend to absorb the water that condenses on the glass. That way they don't stick to the glass when you pick it up.
The White Hand and the Eye of Sauron, hee hee.
I have more, but I don't want the post to take forever to load. There are more pix at these links: http://img.photobucket.com/...bby/Ponycoasters.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/...Flibby/leaftriv1.jpg This one shows a bunch of my ceramics from a booth I did at a convention, but most of these actual pieces have been sold. But you can kinda see a nice sampling of the stuff I make: http://img.photobucket.com/...excellent_banner.jpg

I'm dreaming of a black Christmas Just like the one I never knew Where the treetops shrivel And children quiver To hear Sauron singing too. I'll leave the second verse to someone else.

I'm dreaming of a black christmas as black as evil lord as where the gates open when the right king cometh and Sauron sings his last verse... mwahahaha!

BWAHAHA! You guys are so funny! I hadn't even thought of the proper carol for those guys... A miserable sight, so ugly tonight, walkin' in a Mordor Wonderland... In the ashpit we can build an Orcman, We'll pretend that he's the Angmar King, He'll say "Are you Baggins?" We'll say "No, Man," And run off to Mt. Doom to throw the Ring... oh, the possibilities are endless.

How did you do those? Gold pen on black ornaments that you found (or did you have to paint them)? Oh... and a VERY steady hand? Lol! Welcome to TORn turimel! (I love your carol addition too).

Those are absolutely beautiful. I would definitely buy some if they were on the market. If it is your original idea I wonder if you could market them or sell your idea to someone like Side Show. Gollum would definitely think they are precious!!!

They're ceramic--I buy the blank (bisque) ornaments from a company in Louisiana and then glaze them myself. I make regular ornaments (well, "regular" in the sense of being non-LOTR, but fun and colorful) too, but there was something about that particular shape that just screamed Ring Inscription. It was a bit tight to make it all fit just so, but I think it works. I use underglazes, which are matte, to do the writing and coloring, then put a coat of clear glaze over the top to make them shiny. So the writing won't come off. Yeah, all my LOTR ceramics for sale, but I'm not sure how much to charge for the ornaments. They were a lot of work! I thought I might send one down to the ORC Art auction and see what it fetches. The only trouble is, I'm so paranoid about them getting broken, since I won't be there to set them up myself.

*thinks* Well, shoot. I only put blown glass ornaments on my tree (besides the ceramic ones I make) and I'm used to paying at least $30 per ornament (and I buy them right after Christmas when they're on clearance! Champagne tastes on a lite beer budget, as usual). I can probably ship one for about $5 (it's light, but it'll need a LOT of protective packaging). Herm. You think $40, maybe, if that includes shipping? It's hard to price, because most of my pottery I basically charge by the inch, but I literally worked on the elvish lettering for the past YEAR, getting it right. These are seriously handmade pieces. Just because I'm insane enough to spend that kind of money on an X-mas ornament doesn't mean everybody is... If you're interested, we can set it up the sale through paypal just like my other pottery. I haven't put the ornaments on the website yet, they're too new and I've been too busy, plus I was hoping to make it to ORC. Sadly, that doesn't look good this year. Well, let me know.

considering I had gotten a glass ornament that had horses painted on the inside(from China) and with far less detail for about the same price through a horsey catalog. It has been awhile since I first posted.( I keep forgetting to subscribe to these post and now I am having a hard time remembering where and what I posted!) I have a verified pay pal account. Let me know if you still want to part with one. Sorry to hear you may not make it to ORC. I have been drooling over the idea for a couple of years now. I am thinking of trying to track down who ever organized the one in Orlando a few years ago and see if they could do it again and offer to help. I could handle a 3 hour drive but not a major trip and hotel bill. I didn't know about the first one held in Orlando. Maybe some day I will get to go. Well take care, Karen

Karen: I'm willing to part with one--the first is promised already but there ARE two, after all... I have all sorts of other nifty pottery if you think you might like some other things--to save on shipping after all. I think I'll post the pictures by editing the first entry, actually. So, let me know for sure you want the ornament, and anything else if something catches your eye, and I'll send you my paypal info! As for steady hands--I shake like the dickens, but fortunately (!!) it takes several coats of glaze to get the effect I want, so by the time I've gone over it enough, it all kinda averages out to a straight line! J.

Yes, I want the ornament and will email you with the order after I finish looking. I was not aware of your other pottery and just went to your homepage. I wish I was wealthy I would have you make a whole dinnerware set! I finally realized that I need to check each and every persons profile for their homepage! Thanks for getting back to me! Take care, Karen
The repetition, the doubling and the long strands of interconnected narrative all mean something. They say that life is a series of cycles, and that we will likely meet the same kinds of archetypal guardians, opponents and allies at various stages along the way. But the nature of the conflicts changes as you age and grow over the span of an epic. Reading 'The Lord of the Rings' in my 20s, I was inspired by its idealism, but also terrified by its vision of middle life and old age as a patient, plodding struggle against the mundane grinding of evil. Seeing the movie meant something else to me from my current perspective, around the corner of age fifty, reminding me that the raw intensity of youthful dreams still has purity and power. At the same time, I felt the death of comrades in the movie keenly, for comrades have started to fall around me, and I looked to the story for the courage to continue the struggle without them.---seeking meaning for our shadowed world in the mirror of a myth, just as humans have always done. .--Christopher Vogler

I get a lot of that. I wish I didn't have to charge so much--and I do "bulk discounts--" but the fact is, it takes a lot of moola to operate the kilns and keep the pottery wheel serviced and so on. Making a matched set is also pretty challenging; I usually have to make at least twice as many pieces (often more like 4x) just because there are so many variables like warping, cracking, shrinking, unexpected reactions with the glazes on neighboring pieces, etc etc, not to mention the old standby of dropping the durn thing and shattering it. So it's more work than just the set...and it all adds up. But I have several people that get stuff when they can afford it, slowly building up their supply of Gandalf tumblers or whatever . I custom-make stuff all the time, so if you've ever wanted a teacup with a Celtic knot for a handle or your name in Tengwar written on it, or whatever, just let me know.
