My daughter's Smaug

My daughter doodled Smaug on the whiteboard in my home office: http://www.flickr.com/...allender/4249565552/ My son (who actually read The Hobbit; I think my daughter may only have heard it read aloud) fixed the spelling of the name. And then he pointed out that Smaug needed wings, so I added those, along with the helpful labeling for would-be Bards. If Guillermo wants someone to help realize his dragon, I'm sure Julia would be happy to relocate to New Zealand for a few years. Especially if her more-Tolkien-obsessed family can come along, too. :-)

I'm in the process of geekifying my 11 yo niece. I gave her a copy of The Hobbit for her birthday, and she was inspired to create Smaug out of Sculpey clay. Here he is.
And suddenly the Ainur saw afar off a light, as it were a cloud with a living heart of flame.

Clearly, your niece should join my daughter in helping out in the Weta creature shop. :-) John

I bet she is proud of it. If any voting is involved in getting her (and you) to NZ I would vote for her! LOL

With caffeine, all things are possible. The pity of Bilbo will screw up the fate of many.

WHOOT! That's flippin' adorable! I like the fact that he's loopey-snakey... and the wings; perfect. And the goo-goo-googley eyes! Sculpey is the gift of the Valar.... you can do a cheaper version, if you run out of sculpey: one part salt, one part water, two parts flour, mix to dough, sculpt (it works best as a flat "cookie" or try it over a wire/aluminum foil armature), let dry or bake at around 300 or 350 degrees F. They last forever, unless they get wet. I've done these, inserted a paper clip as a hanger (before baking) and given as Yule ornaments. I've been amazed at what some of the kids do in my (somewhat informal) art classes (for parks and recreation). If you give them the materials, show them a bit about how it works and turn them loose, it's amazing what they come up with. So different from the art classes I had as a kid: "now do this, now do that, no no, not that way..."

Very cool! I have a very hard time drawing in marker, just not enough subtlety and colors. This is great use of limited color!
