Luthien and the Cloak of Shadows

"It is told in the Lay of Leithian how she escaped from the house in Hirilorn; for she put forth her arts of enchantment, and caused her hair to grow to great length, and of it she wove a dark robe that wrapped her beauty like a shadow, and it was laden with a spell of sleep. Of the strands that remained she twined a rope, and she let it down from her window; and as the end swayed above the guards that sat beneath the tree they fell into a deep slumber. Then Luthien climbed from her prison, and shrouded in her shadowy cloak she escaped from all eyes, and vanished out of Doriath." --The Silmarillion
A full-page illustration for Mythlore. I had limited time to get a drawing done for this particular issue of the journal. So I did this picture, because half the drawing required me to use nothing but solid black! Pen and ink.

I am in awe at your ability to convey feeling through your subjects. Well done.

and indeed, I think it is great! I particularly like how you've got the shading covering Lúthien's fingers, making it look like they really are in shadow, as if she is shaded at night. Very nice! I also like the mixture of trees in the background, some dicot, some conifer. It is also nice how you manage to combine technique, stiple for Lúthien and other objects in the foreground, but the line-shading for the guards in the background - but more stipple for the trees. Well done!

I haven't had a chance to comment on your other pieces, just from lack of time, but all of them are absolutely wonderful. Do you have a website where you have all of your art up? I'd love to see it all. You are truly talented.

Maybe I'll think about putting one together eventually. I'd probably have to do a few new drawings and paintings first! Thanks again. WB

I've looked at a few of your works on here, and while they are all very good, I must say I like this one best. I can't say for sure why, but I suspect it has something to with her eyes. Keep up the good work, they're all lovely!
