Hobbit fan art- Flies & Spiders Can't Post

Hi there! first post Wink
And for my first post I would like to share this piece of artwork that I've done for the Hobbit>>> taken from the chapter "Flies and Spiders" where Blibo looks for the dwarfs. It's a nice dark scene I guess.
I hope you like it.

Cheers

Very nicely done!... [In reply to] Can't Post

But for some reason when I look at those spiders, they remind me of ladybugs.

Well done! I like it. Smile

I've been burned by making comments in the past, so I'm asking first: Would you like some critical feedback?

Art criticism [In reply to] Can't Post

Okay, before I go any further, let me reiterate that I like this painting and feel that it is well done. If I didn't feel this way, it would not be worth my while to take the time to criticize it! Smile

You have a couple significant anatomical errors:

First, your spiders look like beetles. If you look at a spider close-up, you will notice that its body is composed of two regions, a head and an abdomen, not three like an insect. All twelve legs, including the fanges, the petipalps for manipulating prey, and the eight walking legs, attach to the head. There should also be eyes on the head. The spinnarets should also be visible at the back end of the abdomen. What you have here looks like an insect with a head, thorax, and abdomen, with three pair of legs attached to the thorax.

Second, Bilbo looks like a child. This is due mainly to the size of his head: adult men generally have head width about one quarter the width of their shoulders, and women have heads one third their shoulder width. Bilbo's head here is more than half of his shoulder width, which is about consistent with a child of age 6-8. This last point could be a mis-recollection on my part, but I also think hobbits are supposed to have curled hair.

Outside of anatomy:

The sinuousness of the wood in the trees is good; it covers the atmosphere of the twisted, gnarly, tortured trees. The folds in Bilbo's tunic make his arms look almost as if they are made of the same substance, though. There also looks like there is quite a bit of light filtering down from the canopy up above, implying that the canopy is actually quite think which does not fit the description either (layers and layers of leaves). The shaft of light above Bilbo's head also reminds me of that.

Your overall strong points are that the atmosphere is good, the shading and direction of lighting is excellent, and your choice of medium, which looks like colored pencil, are very good for this scene, because they effectively draw the sinews of the bark and the white lines of the spider webs. You also have good control of the geometry both of the web in the foreground and in prospective, although I worry that Bilbo's arms may be a little too long. Sting is excellent: it looks like it is shining out, even though at the same time it could just be reflective! The shaft of light illuminating the mushrooms is also a nice touch. The bare bases of the trees are unrealistic, as they should be covered with leaves, but at the same time, it implies that they may have recently moved, as if the trees themselves are mobile (this would be particularly good in Fangorn!).

Anyhow, solid piece of work! If I were to suggest something you should work in, it would be anatomy, particularly of non-human animals (e.g. look at some pictures of real spiders and see how they are put together!).

nice crit! [In reply to] Can't Post

Wow, now that's one hell of a critic! I like it Smile
You are correct about anatomy, I made a mistake by not skimming through references. I some what over-did Bilbos head though, to make him seem like a child ( as hobbits should feel like ), but I guess you are right.
I can fix the spiders don't worry!
About the canopy, I know it should be much darker and nearly minimum light goes through it, but I was afraid that the image it self will be too dark and boring then.... a sacrifice for art lol.

By the way, this piece is a digital painting done %100 with Photoshop Cool
Cheers!

Contrast, maybe? [In reply to] Can't Post

Maybe lower the contrast a little bit? I don't know, you might want to play with it. But you are absolutely right: it's not always possible to make art that is both visually appealing and accurate to the description in the text, so what you have might be the best it could be as far as lighting goes.

Now that's a Mirky Wood [In reply to] Can't Post

Very good illustration. I like the dark aspect and closeness of the trees. The spiders look dangerous.

Yummy! [In reply to] Can't Post

Perfect Mirkwood! It looks like a place of darkness and terror now, but I can also imagine it with sunlight, green moss and leaves, and then it's a beautiful place.

Very nicely done! This is similar to how I pictured the scene when I first read the book. Keep up the great work! Smile

Thank you all for the support :)
Yes it was done 100% in photoshop ( with a tablet ). I will post an upgrade ( I'm fixing the spiders! ), but I might be a bit delayed because of other projects ( no Saruman is not holding me up on his tower! ).

Cheers until then!
