Fellowship: Portraits
|
Can't Post
|
|
Somewhere around 40 hours later, I finally finished all 9 of them on one big piece of paper. http://ainulaire.deviantart.com/...p-Portaits-129294013. Click on the picture in the URL for a full view to get a good look at all of the details. The long description in the link above describes some of the process, as well as the technical stuff like dimensions and whatnot, but, in short, I discovered: *I can't draw chainmail. At least chainmail that's really tiny. *I have developed a dislike towards hobbits. *I hate Frodo and despite that he took the longest, he still isn't up to snuff. *shakefist* *Boromir looks great in black and white. *Gandalf was surprisingly easy. *Aragorn is still amazing. *I think the b/w photo of Merry is odd and drawing it looking not-odd is futile. *Gimli is the bomb. *I like Legolas even if he doesn't quite look like Orlando Bloom. Oh well. Any comments/critique appreciated.

Charcoal for the backgrounds and some of the darker parts of the clothing, especially Pippin. Good ol' pencils for everything else. It was done on 18 x 24 in paper.

I love it. Excellent detail. I like charcoal and pencil too, but I easily get impatient with it. That's why I stick to paint mostly. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice, and with all the trouble you say you had...Gratz on pushing through and finishing it!! 90% perspiration indeed. As far as a critique I'd say: Don't do that again! :) meaning don't make it hard for yourself by doing all 9 in one piece of paper, doing the heads small...working in charcoal on paper isn't the easiest...doing 9 portraits...man! If this was a freelance job and someone asked me for 9 portraits of these guys, fairly small, I might say $1000 since I'd like to do it anyway. If they said they all have to be on one piece of paper and done in charcoal at 4x6 inches I'd double the price. Actually the only real critique I'd give is to not be afraid to change or edit your reference to make a better picture. Those photos if I remember are really well done and about the best reference you'll ever get but still they are real life and you are making ART ( yes, capital letters, bold and italics and stuff.....ART!!!). The greatest thing about art (ART!) is that it is NOT real and therefore can be better then real. When doing comics what you change is to make the figures more muscular, streatch the poses until a real person would dislocate their limbs, make everything more dynamic. With a landscape you might change the colors to try and make the viewer feel the mood you feel as you paint it. With portraits what you change is usually just the values or colors to make the viewer look where you want them to, usually the eyes. So you put the greatest contrast and interesting texture around the eyes and in the face and make everything else a bit more subtle so it gets lost. But this is very subtle, the viewer shouldn't notice really and there can still be interesting things all around the image but they must be secondary to the primary focus. I advertising art this is referred to as "1st read" what the viewer sees 1st. On your images the hair looks a little spotty and gets my attention a bit too much. Don't be afraid to redesign the hair to a more simplified form. Clothing and the folds in clothing should be redesigned and simplified almost always or it'll be distracting and take away from the rest of the image. The clothes look great btw, but again I'd like to see the faces just come forward and make me look at them more then anything else. But jeeze, you're doing 1 inch heads in charcoal!! Awesome job. Now do a portrait in graphite at a nice easy size like 11x14 on nice smooth paper using 2H through 9B leads to make the values easier... I hope you're not "...done with drawing for a while...", I'm sure that took a lot of energy. You rock! Keep it up! ...posting this incredibly long winded comment on your deviant page also... D

I like particularly like Sam. It looks more like the Sam I get in my head reading the books than Sean Astin does. Aragorn's great, as usual. That's not too surprising from you. Can you post the original picture? I'd quite like to see if comparison, if that's okay.

They are all very impressive and each are individually recognisable. 40 hours for so many is extremely impressive.
