This year three remarkable LOTR fan films have been released. The visually stunning Hunt for Gollum, the action-packed Halifirien, and the epic Born of Hope.

I forgot about PTTS, but not many people have seen it as it hasn't been released publicly.
To be honest, it's a fair effort but i don't see it beating these three in any categories.

I'm sure my answers pretty much mirror yours, except that since I have seen the Peril to the Shire I consider it a superior effort to Halifirien, which differs from your answer. But all those young actors get a might A for effort for both those two films.

I've not seen "Peril to the shire," but from what i can see that had 25 families involved and they got 5 miniDV cameras and loads of other expensive equipment.
Halifirien had about 3 families from what i can see, about 12 people and was made on a budget of 350 euro ... And most of that must have gone on their camera, I assume.
Halifirien had horses, catapults, a troll, caves, mountains, an underwater scene, an animated intro, authentic looking costumes, a camp site with a tower which they actually knocked down, a realistic sounding original music score. It was dark, gritty and violent like Peter Jackson's, but original with shaky camera, while still mentaining the feel of Tolkien's world.
The only flaw was the audio (which is never very good in amateur films)
If it had been shot on a HD camera it would be up their with BOH and H4G. It must have taken a MASSIVE effort.

I'm actually breaking down the categories like they do in my theatre group, rather than the Oscars, and applying them to these films:
Best Actress/Actor - the lead characters in the film
Best Supporting Actress/Actor - not the leads, but very important characters
Best Featured Actress/Actor - much smaller roles, but still important to the story
As for the Peril to the Shire, I have not seen it yet. I was only ranking the three films that were mentioned in the original post.

I have to agree with Paul. Halifirien seemed much more professional, more exciting, better plot, and i think point-for-point it would beat PTTS in most categories.
Peril was a great achievement and must have taken a huge effort to produce, but at 3 and a half hours it was just too long and drawn-out. But well done to both production teams.

I have my own biases, of course 
But as anyone who has ever made a movie can tell you, it is a MASSIVE undertaking, and costs LOTS of money, just to get even mediocre equipment and with all volunteers. I personally think of all 4 movies, Kate Madison did absolutely the best. Born of Hope is a fantastic job that is worthy to be seen in the theaters. Plot, acting, costumes and cinematography bested the rest of us. By far.
Having said that, each movie was well done in it's own regard. What Tom was able to do with Halifirien and just a few bucks (or euros) shows a keen eye for the camera. Amatuerish, yes, but he attempted big things as a teen with very limited resources. Kudos for him.
The Hunt for Gollum was also well done, but I felt a bit thin on the storyline. Even so, I liked it very much.
The Peril to the Shire was never meant to be seen publicly, since I had (and still have) copyright concerns. Keep in mind, ours was the first of the four (we premiered in June 2007) and the fight between New Line and Peter Jackson was ongoing. However, our purpose to make Peril was to have a fun summer project for our kids that was educational as well as entertaining. What better way to spend a summer than killing goblins? We did the best we could with the equipment we had, and learned as we went. For a first attempt at movie-making, I say we did pretty darn well. We did have a showing at this past year's DragonCon in Atlanta, and were asked to host a panel on making fan-films. It was a fun time, and we got a private meeting with Craig Parker, the gentleman who played Haldir.

I'm concerned that since it contains copyrighted clips and music from Jackson's movies, it might be legally problematic. If there are any lawyers out there that think differently, let me know.
At one time, Youtube actually stripped the audio from the trailer becasue it detected copyrighted music. I think I got that fixed.
Anyone know how much video can be uploaded at any given time?

I've seen remixes, parodies etc. on Youtube, using footage from the films themselves, which I would think would have the same legal problems as the music would. But I can really understand you're not wanting to venture into that uncertain territory.

a partner account with daily motion. You have to be very popular i think, with certain amount of views/subscribers. Hunt for Gollum have a partner account with youtube as well. This enables longer videos.
