Faithful (Elven) Sidekick

In the westerns I grew up with, there was always a (not terribly accurate or politically correct) Faithful Indian Sidekick. I read somewhere that Tolkien loved "Red Indian stories" (American Westerns) and wondered if they informed his Faithful Elven Sidekicks (indigenous cultures whose knowledge of the land and "magic" aided the Hero). One of my favorites was Voronwe (the "Faithful" is what his name translates as)... this is a fairly old watercolor I did of him, washed up on the beach (just before Tuor finds him) after the fateful storm which destroys his ship, part of the fleet seeking the way to the Uttermost West. http://www.swordwhale.com/playing-with-water.html

Slightly off topic, but not quite (it is fantasy)... Tolkien wrote the ultimate Hero Journey tale... in Alaska this week, 71 mushers and about 1000 dogs embark on a real Hero Journey across 1112 miles of Alaskan wilderness in the Iditarod. I have lived with northern dogs for about 15 years (since a Siberian husky got my goat... the goat lived, I kept the dog). They are a true elemental force of nature, primitive breeds as close as you can get to Wolf and still keep in your living room (wolves belong in the wild). In honor of sled dogs and Wolf, ancestor of all dogs (wolves were sadly dissed by Prof. Tolkien... oh well, he was the product of another, less predator-friendly time), here are a few offerings... (Elf dogs would look like Siberian huskies...)

If Tolkien had gone a bit farther north... One of the northern tribes says (I believe it was an Inuit tribe); "Orca and Wolf are the same spirit, wearing different shapes for land and sea"... here orca, husky, shapeshifting marine photographer/biologist, and wolf make a not so traditional medicine wheel. Prismacolor pencil and watercolor on mat board.

I too love huskies. I think they are amazing creatures; I was lucky enough to visit Alaska last year and loved seeing the working dogs in Denali. And I love your elven art work! Nice.
