The piccies are a bit big, but very nicely done! Welcome to the boards. I hope we see more of your work.

Lovely softness to the skin and hair and the expression is very elvish. I like what you've done with the background as well, with just that hint of landscape. Can you describe your technique at all?

Well those two were quite painstaking, I'm quite hopeless with photoshop so what most 3d artists achieve using photoshop I have to do by using lighting. I really wanted a little luminosity to the skin, & the light reflected in the eyes, so it took a while. My wife is the 'real' artist (she can paint and draw) while I just dabble with 3d. Sorry about the size too, if I post more I'll size them down

They are realistic yet otherworldly - perfect for Elves.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. I am not complaining, but I'm curious about the use of red hair. There are red-haired Elves in the Sil, but not many (indeed, I can name only one). Is this one a relative of Maedhros? I assume that both of these are female - the second one clearly is, and the first one looks female but isn't diagnostically so, if Elves generally have a femanine look, which some artists have applied. I'm curious as to concepts of Elven body shape - Tolkien gives us some descriptions and they aren't what you typically see in Dungeons and Dragons books on Elves, for example, or at least not necessarily. I'm also curious as to the clothing your second picture is wearing - are you envisioning a sort of mundane-world tank-top, or something exotic for what Tolkien would have?

I chose the red simply because it's so unusual in Middle Earth. From everything I've read I never pictured Elves being too far removed from Men by way of actual features, I mean even pointed ears is debated for Middle Earth Elves, so rather than the obviously angular features of the D&D Elf I went for something more subtle & chose the soft 'other worldly' glow you tend to see in the movies. The top she wears was chosen because it's so simple yes.

This is my personal opinion only, naturally. The only thing I would do differently is to move the catchlight in the eyes off center some, because currently they blow out nearly all of the pupils. I know you're going for the "Elves with bright eyes" look (as I think Gollum described them), but I'd rather see the bright catchlight positioned off center from the pupil, and then add a little more luminosity to the iris of each eye. You're almost there on the irises, in my opinion. I'd just go a little farther down that path. I love the red hair. Why not? If it can happen to Maedhros, why shouldn't it happen elsewhere? From my point of view, these are clearly both females. I don't go in for "feminine" male elves, and if I were a bettin' gal, I'd bet Tolkien wouldn't, either. Somewhere in Tolkien's writing, perhaps in Letters, where he describes Legolas as "tall and strong"--which, again in my opinion only, doesn't exactly bring the image of femininity to mind. As for how the looks of Elves and Men compare, there is a short passage in either The Silmarillion or Unfinished Tales that speaks about an elf observing a mortal man approaching him (sorry, I cannot for the life of me remember which characters they are), and only when the man gets close can the elf see that he is not one of the Eldar. (I personally think it's because then the elf can better see the lack of Elven-bright eyes, and perhaps no pointed ears. I'm not into super-pointed elf ears, anyway. I think they should be subtle.) So I agree with you that there is very little physical difference between Elves and Men, and that there are textual things in the various Tolkien books that support this. For the record, Galadriel is about 6'4" tall, as is Celeborn. Aragorn is about 6'6" tall. Elendil was about 7'6" (Whew! Not called "Elendil the Tall" for nothin'!) This info is from Unfinished Tales, if I recall correctly, and if I can find the page numbers where it appears, I'll post them.
