This came up in a thread in OT: book covers DoN asked if I could post pictures of a book cover I made. I had bought "The Book of Weird" in the beat-up bin in a used book store. The paperback cover was torn and bent. I took it off and made a new cover of leather. I called it "Codex Mirificorum", which was my best bet at translating the title. I decided to make it as yummy as possible; a bibliophile's dream. I was thrilled with the way it came out. This was about 25 years ago. I've rebound other books, but this one is my favorite. And quite a bit of work too. It must have taken a while.
"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world." Tolkien and C.S. I don't know where you live but it has to be 3,000 miles away or more, since I live in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and that is how far the California coast is from me. . . Or I would have you reach me how to do this. Its a great skill to have. Thanks for posting our picts. ...

Simplified Bookbinding by Henry Gross To rebind a paperback, you don't have to do any sewing. If the spine is OK then put on a cover. Otherwise just cut slots in the back edges of the pages and glue threads in them to bind them together. You make endpapers by folding large sheets of paper in half, putting them at the front and back of the book, and then gluing a piece of cloth across the spine and onto the endpapers. Then make a cover as described in the book and glue it onto the endpapers. That's a very quick description, but the book describes it in detail. It also describes more traditional signature sewing, which I never learned to do. Making paperbacks into hardbacks was my goal. And my specialty was photocopying out-of-print library books and making nice covers and binding them into hardback books. I haven't done it for years, though. I've gotten lazy and let Kinko's do my binding for me.

I love it - it's so superior to the paper cover, and allows a lot of creativity.
