Were the Iron Hills abandoned? Can't Post

When Dáin Ironfoot became King under the Mountain, do you think that he brought all of his folk from the Iron Hills to Erebor? If any remained, who became their new Lord(presumably under Dáin's authority)?

For myself, I don't know. However, if the Dwarves did abandon the Iron Hills I would think that they would have sealed the gates in order to try to prevent Orcs or other fell creatures from inhabiting the place later.

Good question O-S [In reply to] Can't Post

I checked no – not abandoned. I think that, although not gold and jewels, the iron mined from the Iron Hills would be of significant value to the Dwarves and the Hills wouldn’t be totally abandoned.

As the Iron Hills colony of Dwarves was originally settled in about T.A. 2590 by 2941 it would be quite sizable, and Dain with 500 of his sturdiest, swiftest, and best fighters would be sent to the aid of Thorin, leaving behind the women, children, elderly, and a sizable number of fighting age to defend against possible attack.

I wouldn’t care to guess who their new Lord would be, but as you say – probably serving in absentia of King Dain. I wonder if, whoever it was, if he had a Khazad ranking similar to Ruling Steward – Khuzdul = ?

Immigrant Dwarves [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm sure that any of Dáin's fighters who decided to remain in Erebor would have either gone back for or sent for their families. But you're probably right about Dáin wanting to maintain the existing mines for their resources if nothing else. And by TA 2941 many dwarves would have felt a deep connection with the Iron Hills and would have wanted to stay regardless.

That's a great question [In reply to] Can't Post

And I've always wondered about that. I would tend to guess no, for the reasons that both you and Bracegridle mentioned. There are resources in the Iron Hills (Dain wouldn't have gone there in the first place if there wasn't some way to make a living), and I don't think they would leave a potentially valuable territory completely uninhabited and unguarded.

I'm guessing no [In reply to] Can't Post

because they never really abandoned the Blue Mountains after millenia. The two places we know they did completely abandon, Moria and Erebor, they were driven away from, and they tried to go back to both places eventually. So, I think the Dwarves hold onto the homes they have, even with reduced numbers.

The Blue Mountains [In reply to] Can't Post

No, the Dwarves never completely abandoned the Blue Mountains, but they did leave the cities of Belegost and Nogrod after they were flooded when the range was broken at the end of the First Age. Granted, they apparently tried for 40 years to reclaim the cities before heading East to Moria. Tolkien himself wrote that some Dwarves remained in the Ered Luin, especially in the southern Blue Mountains.

In any case, I tend to agree that at least some of the Dwarves remained in the Iron Mountains, probably provisionally still under the authority of Dáin.
