Here I put a list from many other lists from websites and made these five into a poll. What is the best movie of these five top movies?

I'm not sure what kind of websites you used for your information, but none of these even remotely qualify as "best movie". Now, if you wanted us to select the best movie from among these, that's another thing entirely!

what is best for me now was not best for me then and won't be best in the future. I'd rank any LOTR movie over the Star Wars because the Star Wars dialog gives me twitches. Harry Potter as a franchise is uneven to the extreme and would have benefited from being filmed closer together as the stars aged too much. But there are tons of films and franchises I enjoy that aren't listed.....Marvel....both Avengers and X Men..... Star Trek.....both old and new.... Then go for the oldies but goodies..... Cary Grant's movies, for that matter Shirley Temple's, Jimmy Stewart movies, Hitchcock's...... can't possible say best of all time......

If you're judging by popular consensus of critics & film buffs, the only one on your list they'd agree with is The Godfather. But that doesn't mean we as individuals have to agree. I have a long list of films that I can watch over and over and never tire of. I couldn't say which one is the "best" - best at what? Best at everything? David Lean's films, particularly Dr. Zhivago, are for me the best "big" movies; but my personal preference is for small quirky movies like Cold Comfort Farm, Local Hero, Enchanted April. My all-time favorite might just be Truly, Madly, Deeply, but then there's A Room with a View, Persuasion, It's a Wonderful Life, Laura, The Philadelphia Story, Stranger than Fiction . . . nope, can't pick just one. I've never seen The Godfather.

The only one on the list that even comes up for consideration is "The Godfather" but depending on mood of the day:
- The Sound of Music
- An American in Paris
- Rocky
- The Sting
- Gettysburg
- The Longest Day
- A Bridge Too Far
- The Man Who Killed Liberty Valance
- Arsenic and Old Lace
- Tootsie
- Patton
- Superman the Movie
- The Little Mermaid
- We Were Soldiers
- The Searchers
- Oliver!
- Gandhi
- Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Yes, I did throw in a Disney movie and Willy Wonka on that list ...

Citizen Kane (1941) is the best American movie of all time. The Godfather (1972) would be the only one from your list within the top 10. There's no doubt that Seven Samurai, Citizen Kane, and The Godfather were, are, and will continue to be extremely influential with filmmakers past, present, and future. Indeed, if you study the other four films on your list, it's obvious that their makers owe so much to the pioneering genius of Akira Kurosawa, Orson Welles, and Francis Ford Coppola. (Not to mention Sergei Eisenstein and Leni Riefenstahl.)

You give people a selection and say "best movie" I'd assume most people would know you mean choose the best of this selection, not what is the best movie ever made. I suppose if you had asked that they'd say "On what merits?? How much I enjoy them? How well they're made? What time-frame? What if the best movie hasn't been made yet! How do you define a movie?" And even then the results would be meaningless because critical consensus needs to be taken into account.

You give people a selection and say "best movie" I'd assume most people would know you mean choose the best of this selection, not what is the best movie ever made. The wording was changed from the original post. The choices were originally supposed to represent the best movies ever. dernwyn changed it.

in my opinion, one of the most overrated films of all time. There is a pose known in our family as 'The Shawshank Manoeuvre'. We like to strike this when we achieve a goal or feel generally triumphant.

and has already wandered off-course into the land of interesting. We have “best” and we have “favorite”. Well, “best” according to whom; by what standard; in what way? Are we supposed to regurgitate “Citizen Kane” as “best” of all time, as we are told to do by critics and filmmakers? IMO there is no “best” but there are many “favorites” of which I could not pick “just one”. Do I pick one that makes me laugh? Do I pick one that makes me weep? Do I pick one that makes me think? Or do I pick one that strikes an emotion somewhere in between? Nope, can’t do it. Not just one! So, “best” aside, my “favorites” are movies that I just plain enjoy for what they give me. And my incomplete list goes on: The Day the Earth Stood Still Spartacus Rear Window Psycho Liberty Valance Dr. Strangelove The Shining Vertigo Superman (the 1st) Mad Mad Mad Mad World Patton Fargo Tombstone Cannery Row Lust for Life Dirty Dozen Midnight Express The Odd Couple Where Eagles Dare The Vikings Soylent Green Planet of the Apes

..since one of those films stands out for me as the one I like best (no prizes for guessing which!) I'm not sure how there can be an objective 'best movie of all time' because it depends what the judgement is based on, and who's making it. As everyone seems to be naming other movies that stand out for them, I'd add a few more names that come to mind Gladiator Ben Hur The Sound of Music Dr. Zhivago The Book Thief Camelot Whistle Down the Wind

Of all the films to choose from since the late 1800's to now. But you did put my favorite up there (and, yes, I'm the type that considers that synonymous with the best), so I voted for it. It's got a ring and a king and an innocent being who loses his soul on a moutainside.

Let's see, two are fantasy films, one is a crime drama, one is sci-fi and one is a comic book movie. Pretty diverse list, and I'm not sure they can be so easily compared. To be honest, I don't think I've ever seen "The Godfather" all the way through, parts of it for sure but not the whole thing. So, unlike the Academy Awards board, I can't vote because I haven't seen all five of them.
