Movie Times [In reply to] Can't Post

Changing the year of Bilbo's birthday party just seems like a stupid, clumsy mistake. There really is no good reason for it.

Compressing the timeframe by eliminating most of the next seventeen years is discussed in the Director/Writers' Commentary. Jackson, Boyens and Walsh felt that the compression was needed to maintain dramatic tension. It also allowed Jackson to introduce Samwise, Merry and Pippin as fully-grown adults at Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday instead of casting younger actors to play the child (in the case of Pippin) and adolescent versions of the characters, as well as making the three contemporary in age with Frodo.

Guesses, mostly [In reply to] Can't Post

Managed this without looking at the book (or other replies);
Gimli oldest - he was "too young" in his early sixties to go on Bilbo and Thorin's adventure at the start of the '40's so probably born c. '80 of the previous century.
Aragorn next - happened to know he was born in '31
Frodo - aged 50 at the time of his adventures so was born around '68
Boromir - I had not much to go on except a feeling that he wasn't as old as 50 but not a really young man - possibly born in the '70s
Sam - again just a feeling that he was a bit more grown up than Merry and Pippin but definitely not of Frodo's generation - late 70s or early 80s perhaps.
Merry - born in the early '80s, which I did know
Pippin - definitely the youngest

Your guesses are right on. And your memory is exemplary. Smile

FYI here’s the poop – youngest to oldest.

Proper (book) positioning on Dec. 25, 3018:
1. Pippin born in 2990 = 28 yrs.
2. Merry born in 2982 = 36 yrs.
3. Samwise born in 2980 = 38 yrs.
4. Boromir born in 2978 = 40 yrs.
5. Frodo born in 2968 = 50 yrs.
6. Aragorn born in 2931 = 87 yrs.
7. Gimli born in 2879 = 139 yrs.
