new Star Trek movie?

Supposedly JJ Abrams is set to direct Star Trek XI. Rumors are that Matt Damon is in talks to play Kirk, Adrien Brody ditto for Spock, Gary Sinise for McCoy, and James McAvoy for Scotty. What do we think? Me, I'm reminded of the 200th episode of Stargate SG-1 where the producers envision the characters played by "younger, edgier" actors - all of whom carry cell phones and are constantly angst-ing about whether or not the others like them. And you know the rule about odd and even Star Trek movies . . .

How is it Star Trek 11, which suggests continuity, if they are going back to Kirk and Spock?! Shouldn't it be Star Trek -3 or something? Bad bad bad bad bad. James Bond did well by not numbering things. What is rather fascinating to me is no Star Trek film has done giant business at the box office. They were modest hits or worse. It seems like a 'blockbuster' movie franchise but never was.

...this actually sounds like a pretty spot on cast. Could go either way, depending on the script. But with that talent attached, I'm betting it won't go before the cameras without a decent script and adequate FX budget.

Quietly steals cahobbit's Vader emote.....
Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament... There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth, and more than that: Death: by the divine paradox, that which ends life, and demands the surrender of all, and yet by the taste (or foretaste) of which alone can what you seek in your earthly relationships (love, faithfulness, joy) be maintained, or take on that complexion of reality, of eternal endurance, which every man's heart desires. --J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter #43, to his son Michael

You're early. Tomorrow's March 1, not April 1. You're not kidding? Really? Oh. My. God. Okay... JJ Abrams - *briefhappydance* There is no geek in the world into whose hands I'd rather put Star Trek. If I had to. Do I have to? I love Adrien Brody. I love Gary Sinise (at least the pre-CSI GS). *googles James McAvoy* Hm. Matt Damon? Oh no. I think the odds of these actors actually being signed are appropriately astronomical... I never liked the idea of an Early Years of TOS series or movie... They're bound to mess up the continuity completely... Overall, I'm scared. Didn't "Enterprise" prove to them that we need to let Star Trek rest for a while?? Look what a rest did for Doctor Who! Argh. *considers borrowing CA's Darth Vader too*

If you've managed to miss McAvoy so far (Mr. Tumnus in "Narnia," young Leto in "Children of Dune," the doctor in "Last King of Scotland") you won't for long. I think he's in every other movie coming out soon.

As Scotty? ... I'll need to get back to you; that does not compute. I haven't seen him in anything else that I know of (I don't get out much)... I liked Tumnus. But. Wait, Last King of Scotland? Oh, I can't even imagine these actors actually signing!

But I lost interest in the ST franchise after TNG, and I haven't even seen the last couple movies. My opinion of Star Trek is that it should have ended when Gene Roddenberry died.

I'd previously heard that Ben Affleck was definitely in as Spock. Nice to hear different. Matt Damon seems okay, as does Sinise. I kind of liked another suggestion I've heard about Johnny Depp or Christian Bale for Spock. And Sean Bean as Scotty.

he's a bit long in the tooth to play Scotty during Academy days. Coming up on 50 in a couple of years . . .

Scotty is 11 years older than Kirk. Bean is 47. Seems a perfect fit.

He'd certainly bring a good edge to the character! Ben Affleck shouldn't be allowed anywhere near this - or any other - project. I laughed so much when he was announced as an 'Oscar winning screen writer' at the Awards on Sunday - hear that Ben? Actor you ain't!
