Welcome to Fiesta!

Well, hello everyone! Another Fiesta Friday celebration is upon us. A relatively quiet week for B.G. and I. We had one pretty cold day with lots of rain (for us), and were rewarded the next day when the clouds cleared with a vista of brand new snow on the tops of the mountains. A beautiful sight with the contrast of the blue sky and a few 'early bird' Canadian geese already starting their journey south. Work, and a few meetings topped off the week for me. It will take me a week or so to wrap a few things up, then I'll be free until 2026. Just the way I like my partial retirement to be. . B.G. and I will have a late night tonight, as the All Black game is live here at 11:00 p.m.. But, we'll have plenty of time to catch up on sleep because the Broncos have a Monday Night Football game this week, so we'll be having a small family gathering on Sunday. Did your have a good week? Planning a fun weekend? The Fiesta bar is stocked full, and the Fiesta buffet is piled high. So, get a drink and a bit and let us know how you're doing! *puts quarters on juke box* whatever you feel like listening to, we do to! Have a great weekend, friends!

It's definitely not summer anymore! We've just enjoyed a full day of much-needed rain here, too. It's great to have that long "vacation" from your work, just in time for the holiday season! You don't often get an All Black game live that early here, do you? Baseball season is nearly at an end, and although the Red Sox have at time made some ridiculous errors, they've also had some excellent plays. I've been writing up my introductory notes for the next community band concert, scheduled for the end of October. Did you know that John Philip Sousa was a great baseball fan, and when younger would often pitch? In Paris at the 1900 World's Fair, he had his band change into baggy pants and form a team to play the American Guards there. For fun, here's his "The National Game". Watch out for the ball coming towards you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMoFA22OG1Q

I didn't know that about Sousa. I bet that was a great game. I've drifted away from baseball, although every once in a while if B.G. turns it on I find myself sitting down and watching. My father loved it. I remember watching the Denver Bears on TV, and making a few trips to Bear Stadium to watch them live - especially for the 4th of July fireworks games. My mom was the football fan in the family, so after my dad passed away, the Bears were replaced on our TV by the Broncos, and I became a much bigger fan of football than baseball. But, it will always have a place in my sporting heart, and I totally understand the appeal. Glad you've enjoyed the Red Sox season (mostly). Have an amazing weekend!

Wow, on October's doorstep already - we'll be eating Thanksgiving leftovers before we know it. Wishing you good luck on the last bit of work for the year, Altaira! Shockingly, SoCal has had a very, very mild late summer. This is the coolest September I can recall experiencing. Fingers crossed that doesn't mean we're in store for some October/November heat! I had a long weekend last week and enjoyed unplugging for a little staycation. On Monday I did a solo hike that was really interesting and fun, which we'll definitely be adding to our list of go-to local hikes. Work was mostly tolerable this week, so I'll take that as a big win too! This weekend we're going to more youth soccer as well as family bingo. There's also a new movie coming out that we've been waiting a couple of years for - it's called One Battle After Another (starring Leonardo DiCaprio). I love the director's work so am very excited to finally see it. Reviews so far seem absolutely glowing. The Dodgers managed to win their division, so we're gearing up for the playoffs, which begin on Monday. Wishing everyone a happy and relaxing weekend.

Now that we are past the equinox, signs of autumn are appearing: falling leaves and birds preparing for migration. Part of my karma is to have a spouse who doesn't drive. This means that I must chauffeur her to work, perhaps five days per week. Wednesday, 8:45 a.m., we arrive at her workplace just about on time (a minor miracle), only to find a flock of geese in front of the door; it appeared that they wanted to get in some shopping before heading south:
Have you ever heard a woman scream at a flock of geese for making her late for work? I managed to keep from laughing until she was safely inside.
Don't mess with my favorite female elves.

Has anyone got any Bots-Be-Gone handy? We also have fresh snow (the mountain's clouded-in but you can feel it on the air) but there are heaps of blossoms bursting out on my peach and plum trees, so it balances out. Yay, spring! I've just started two weeks leave from work and I'll be spending the first one in Perth, visiting my sister and going to the All Blacks/Wallabies game there (I expect the ABs to lose again - we haven't been the usual powerhouse since Richie McCaw retired in 2015). My brother and SIL are going too, so it'll be a proper family gathering, just with more warmth and sunshine! Have a great weekend, everyone.

Like you said, I'm sure they were just waiting for the stores to open so they could grab a quick bite and a coffee to go. May future commutes be less eventful, and may your weekend be a wonderful one!

...a new path that's a definite "keeper", now that made for a great weekend! Family bingo? Is it tied into the youth soccer - for an all-day event? I too have not heard of that movie before now! Hmm... it says, comedy-adventure? Okay, we'll need a review from you! Congrats to the Dodgers, now to see if the Sox can get some on-base hits this weekend. Enjoy the first weekend of Autumn, and may your work become less onerous!

Usually Canada geese will stroll out of the path of an oncoming vehicle. They obviously needed their morning coffee.

But then, landing might have been the most hazardous part! Starting it up seems like it would have shaken Snoopy right off the top of his doghouse. Why was it called a "Sopwith Camel"? (I'll let you answer, rather than looking it up myself!)

It must smell awesome out there. Safe travels on your journeys around, and have a wonderful time with all the family! (By the way, I never know if I'll have a page pull up right away, or have the site "time out". And the 'bots are coming in, in all different IP addresses, not like the previous ones which were well-defined. )

Lots of wind and rain this week, which makes me even more grateful for the fine afternoon we had for our human and canine visitors last Saturday. The sun did reappear for a while yesterday, though. Mr Kimi made a sponge cake for the weekend's treat, I made lentil soup, and we made fig paste together. Tonight: venison with blueberries. I plan to pot up some of my tomato plants today, as they're getting satisfyingly large. Disappointing germination of capsicum and aubergine so far, though - possibly not warm enough yet, even indoors. A few plants, but I want *lots*! Time to re-sow. Orchard report: the earliest plum has just about finished its blossom, the later ones are just starting. The first nectarine is flowering, as is one crab apple. Apples and pears still to come. The loquats are ripening - the sheep had a few as a treat this morning. Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend.

What a great combination. I hear you on the struggles to get TORn loaded lately. It also has a tendency to give up and discard a post, meaning I need to get back into my old habit of typing them in an editor first. Have a great time in Perth! I've never been to WA, which always seems so far away (mainly because it is).

Ohhhh... I love that view that you were gifted. Wonderful! :D This past week was really busy with appointments all over the place. But I admit to being a bit distracted with the passing of Robert Redford. He's always been a favourite for most of my life and I know the years were mounting; but it doesn't make the loss any easier. So many wonderful flicks I watch over and over: The Natural Sneakers The Electric Horseman An Unfinished Life All The President's Men The Sting + I did make it to Charlevoix to visit Lake Michigan. It was a perfect day in the 60s and a bit of rain. Keeps the beach clear for me to just hang out and find some unique stones. It's a big happy-booster each time I can get there. I hope everyone has a GREAT weekend! Thanks for taking such great care of us, Altaira :D

That's made me curious! Do you stew the meat and add the berries? Tomatoes are always happy to spring right up, aren't they! What else are you awaiting to germinate, besides the peppers and eggplant? Loquats are ripening already? That seems early! Are those for jams, or just peel-and-eat fresh?

What a wonderful "mental health" trip that is, with the lake-birds cheering you on as you discover "precious" pebbles for collecting! What kinds did you find this time? Oh, The Sting is one of my absolute favorites - probably one of the "most perfect" movies ever! He will be missed - but he left us an amazing legacy to enjoy. Have a relaxing weekend, gramma!

So I'm usually off doing something else while he's making it. But from memory, it's something like this: marinate venison steaks, sear them in a hot pan then finish off in the oven. The blueberries get mixed with wine, shallots, juniper berries and fresh thyme (some of this is also in the marinade), and reduced to deliciousness. The meat is beautifully tender as well as tasty. And a little goes a long way! We don't eat much meat (especially red), so when we do have it we like to make something a bit special. I also have peas, beans, cucumber and zucchini, all of which have germinated nicely. My first lot of cucumbers got munched up by slugs, though :( The loquats do tend to come out well ahead of any other fruit. We just eat them fresh, and the sheep enjoy them, too. The first asparagus spears have appeared! Also strawberry blossom.

I'm just back from the Celebration of Life for my friend John. As expected they filled the 430-seat venue. It was a wonderful program, including performances of some of John's compositions (harpisochord and chorale), a montage of clips from his films, and a reading of the last poem he wrote, plus remembrances from family and friends. But what brought the tears was the last thing: a video of John playing the piano and singing "In My Life" to his wife on their 25th anniversary. I started out the day going to see my niece's new apartment and then having brunch at a place neither of us had been to before. I'm here to tell you that poached eggs baked in a creamy cheese sauce over tater tots with jalapenos is now my new favorite breakfast. Then I stopped off to see a friend who recently had a hip replacement (she's doing great) before setting out to find parking near the theater where the celebration was. Succeeded in finding a free spot halfway up Seattle's tallest hill. And now I'm struggling NOT to fall asleep too early! Next week I'll be editing a 65-page paper down to 40 pages, she said tersely. On Wednesday I start a month-long writing program put on for Mythie folks. They're callinig in MythoWriMo, after NoMoWriMo, but there's no set amount you have to write each day. We're all working on books and it's my hope that it will inspire me to get something on the page every day. And the rain returns this week which will help me; I love rain. I'll just take a scone to go . . .
