The Dresden Files Can't Post

Anyone reading these books? Watching the TV show? Shall we talk?

For those that haven't encountered Harry Dresden, he's a wizard living in Chicago and working as a private investigator. Imagine Harry Potter grown up and somewhat bitter yet still goodhearted, crossed with wisecracking Philip Marlowe. Lots of fun.

The TV show isn't quite as edgy and isn't following the books. The latter is probably a good thing - Jim Butcher is going somewhere with the story arc and I doubt he wants the SciFi channel suits co-creating with him on that. I have quibbles with the show but Paul Blackthorne is excellent casting for Harry. I have hopes that the show will get darker.

and you?

Not reading the books [In reply to] Can't Post

But you and others are influencing me to try them. Is there a best place to start?

yes, you do have to read them in order [In reply to] Can't Post

Each is a separate story but there's an arc and lots of character development.
The order is:

Storm Front
Fool Moon
Grave Peril
Summer Knight
Dead Beat
Blood Rites
Proven Guilty
White Night (coming out next month)

*prints* Thank you. [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been rereading Harry Potter for a program at work, and have been reading some cancer memoirs, but I want to read these next. I was wondering which book was first. Too often library records list reprint dates, and I wasn't sure which was first.

I'm semi-watching [In reply to] Can't Post

I haven't exactly missed an episode, but sometimes I'm catching up on TORn while the TV's on in the background. My son has read all the books, and my husband the first couple, so they've mentioned a few book/TV divergences. I do like the actor playing Harry; from what little I know about the character, I'd say he's a good choice. I like Bob too (I know, he's just a skull in the books), but I'm not so crazy about Murphy. The show hasn't really grabbed me yet, but I'm still giving it a chance.

Yes, although [In reply to] Can't Post

Iv'e only read #1 and #3 since they had a "3 books for the price of 2" thingy going on when I was in Dublin in February but for some reason not all of the series was part of the deal. I've planned to get the rest in pairs I think, should be perfect for Eastern. If I buy all at once I have to finish them all in one go and won't get much work done for a couple of days :-)

What I really want right now is not the books, but Bob. I'm sure he'd finish my thesis if I let him out for a day or two afterwards ...

Don't think they'll send the tv series here in a while, if they do I might see it if they haven't even managed to keep the colour of the Beetle right, then I suppose the rest is quite mixed up too ;-)

bad news [In reply to] Can't Post

it's not even a Beetle.

It's a Jeep with no doors. I guess because it's a lot easier to film people in it than in a bug.

And it's army green.

He also lives in a converted auto garage, not a basement. The lab's pretty cool though.

That's dangerous [In reply to] Can't Post

Driving a car with no doors. Not that vampires and monsters are much better but one should be careful with traffic :-)

If it ever makes it here I suppose they'll send it at some obscure channel at hopeless times. Seems like getting the rest of the books is a better way to find out what happens anyway. And possibly reread book 3 since I might have missed hints etc when I read it before book 2.
