Saying good-bye to the old girl...

Not sure if this belongs in this section... if not, TOO BAD!!! Since some people are still heading over to the old TORn to check out anything new, I thought that maybe it would be a good idea to let the old girl go out with a bang. How about posting our favorite links, quotes, quizzes, Tolkien material, EIs, etc. etc. from TORn's past? Or if you have something new to offer as a tribute? How about a reverse speculation thread where we picture ourselves back in 1999 and try to figure out who we think will be cast as Aragorn & the fox and why PJ is the right/wrong man for the job? How about links to sites that you've discovered over the years through TORn? There's already a pants thread and a haiku post over there, so why not join in the fun? You can post material from other posters or your own. The only thing is, Altaira suggested that perhaps we should use the Gaming board since it's hardly used. We can do that, but I'm kinda partial to Main since it's what most people usually gravitate towards for these things. What say you? I'm not offering any specific date for this... I think we should just post when we feel like it, keeping in mind that the end is almost near for the old girl. Anyway, that's just a suggestion on my part. Y'all run with it if you like.

...that no one has decided to 'baptize' the new boards with the infamous pants thread.

I totally just added something to the pants bit on main (old boards). However, I agree, I think there should be a place for pants in this new place. I'm a fan of pants, myself. Lord of the Pants, we should call it. Or you know, whatev.

I like nostalgia, but not as much as I like teasing some of you. I might feel nostalgia ten years from now when we are all chatting with virtual goggles on and shaking virtual hands in a 3D virtual world and we say, "Remember when . . .". Right now we left the husk of a burnt-out, dilapidated shack and moved into a well-lighted, comfortable new place with windows and ceiling fans in every room. I feel like it is the first day of spring and everybody is saying, "Oh how I remember that beloved winter!" Or after being released from prison feeling missing the concrete floor and orange jumpsuit wardrobe. So, while I certainly (despite a bit of teasing) think everybody's feelings are valid, I just ain't feeling it at all.

Actually I mean that literally and not as some metaphor for the old boards; Winter is my favourite season so I'm always a little sad when warm spring days come along... You wanna make something of it?!

You and I will arm wrestle at DragonCon. You can represent Winter and me Spring! Actually, I enjoy all four seasons, one great thing about Salt Lake City. At 3 a.m. this morning, not a flake of snow in my yard. By 7 a.m. 14 inches.

If the Discussion navigation called THIS area "Discussion Boards" and the old boards "Old Discussion Boards." We need to think of this as the "real" boards.

As you'll see from my avatar, I'm busy strengthening my arm with 'pint work' - so I'll be up to the challenge come DCon!

Your "dilapidated husk" was my "well-lighted, comfortable place," and no amount of teasing is likely to alter that -- it just makes me feel worse. I'm sure I'm in a very tiny majority, but I actually *much* prefer the look and feel of the old board format. If it weren't for the problems with old software overtaxing the server (as I understand it), I would see no reason at all to change. The change hasn't driven me away, obviously, but I consider the new appearance a big minus, along with much of the new behavior. All I want in a message board (any message board!) appearance-wise, is nice, large, clear, readable text that does *not* expand to fill the width of the page and is viewable in a threaded format, with the newest responses at the top of each thread and subthread. I admit, I'm kind of a purist in this respect, but anything that makes it harder to read messages is a step backwards, because reading is what message boards are all about. And the new boards are just plain harder to read.
