Olympics chatter Can't Post

why not?

Yay Black Ferns!

I'm loving all the hype about the nerdy bespectacled US gymnast, Stephen Nedoroscik, who helped the US team to a medal by acing the pommel horse. My favorite meme draws a parallel between him and Steve Rogers/Captain America.

Katie Ledecky winning her 1500m qualifier by HALF A POOL LENGTH.
Shocked

I've been watching kayaking and dressage on a Canadian channel; they don't get a lot of coverage by the US stations, but so fun to watch.

What have been highlights for you?

Ledecky [In reply to] Can't Post

is just on her own planet, isn't she? And Stephen and the rest of the gymnasts are so fun, too.

Apologies/sympathies to the Aussie 'sibs, but it was fun seeing the U.S. women's rugby grab their first ever medal (bronze).

I really enjoyed the women's volleyball match between the U.S. and China - nearly going to a tiebreaker in the end. Only pool play still, but it's clear that event is going to be very entertaining as things unfold.

And of course, Simone Biles & Co. were the showstoppers - what a great job they did today! Really happy for Suni Lee especially, given the journey she's been on since the last Olympics.

I'm also a sucker for all of the swimming and diving events, though I do love watching some of lesser-watched events too. I was about to enjoy some badminton and equestrian a night or two ago but was pulled away, unfortunately.

I'm so, so happy about the Black Ferns [In reply to] Can't Post

going back-to-back golds. So good for the ladies!

I was watching the men's and women's triathlon last night, seeing NZ's Hayden Wilde come from way back to lead the running leg ... right up to the last 1500m when he just got *smoked* by GB's Alex Yee. you can't be mad about coming second when someone of that outrageous quality just leaves you in their dust.

The next few days are finals matches in the rowing for NZ teams - I have my fingers crossed!

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

USA Gymnastics Gold and USA Men's swimming relay [In reply to] Can't Post

are the highlights for me! =)

"By Elbereth and Luthien the fair, you shall have neither the Ring nor me!" ~Frodo

"And then Gandalf arose and bid all men rise, and they rose, and he said: 'Here is a last hail ere the feast endeth. Last but not least. For I name now those who shall not be forgotten and without whose valour nought else that was done would have availed; and I name before you all Frodo of the Shire and Samwise his servant. And the bards and the minstrels should give them new names: Bronwe athan Harthad and Harthad Uluithiad , Endurance beyond Hope and Hope Unquenchable.." ~Gandalf, The End of the Third Age , from The History of Middle Earth series

"He knew now why Beregond spoke his name with love. He was a captain that men would follow, that he would follow, even under the shadow of the black wings."- Siege of Gondor, RotK

Another comics comparison.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Nedororscik was also compared to Clark Kent, especially with the glasses, so he has Steve Rogers/Capt. America - Marvel and Clark Kent/Superman - DC covered. A hero from the MCU and the DCCU at the same time is a hero indeed. And an Olympian too. Make mine Marvel and DC for Direct Currents.
