Great perks! Our school did trips to Boston for the middle-schoolers, to walk the Freedom Trail, so I've done that a couple of times with our kids. Amazing how some of those buildings have survived. Oh good, you got to be a "leaf peeper" in NH and Maine! The latter has some different types of trees than out West, I wonder if it was that pollen? Or maybe you're allergic to blueberries?

forecast is for 80 degrees F and "abundant sunshine" - I'll be wearing my "sunproof" shirt and a hat and sunglasses! Hottest day we've had so far and it's supposed to rain tonight, so we're getting a perfect little window for what a friend called "beachwood drifting."

with the polyps. Sigh. We came up with a method for driving in Boston. Hubby drove (he was kind of a maniac driver anyway) and I held up a map as a signal that "we're tourists!" Yet still, once hubs slowed slightly to enter a roundabout and the car behind us honked and WENT AROUND US (no, there weren't two lanes). A friend driving in Boston reported that she stopped to let pedestrians cross at a crosswalk and they all looked at her suspiciously and stepped back from the edge! Like "we're not falling for that one!"

Love the crosswalk story. Ah, yes. Driving in Boston. When we'd go to my client's branch locations and I drove, I'd get coached by our client. Once on a return trip, the 4 or so lane highway branched out to 12 or so lanes leading up to one of those long banks of toll booths. It was a freeking madhouse and I was having little success positioning us to get through a toll booth. He's like: ok, here's what you do. Squint your eyes and set your jaw. One of those 'if looks could kill' looks is what you're going for. Now, make eye contact with the person driving the car you want to merge ahead of. Under NO circumstances break that eye contact. Now... GO! Hehe. It worked! They broke eye contact first and gave way and we breezed through the rest of the tolls on the way back to town. I'd never dream of driving that way on a regular basis, but I know it's always there, deep down inside, when needed.

Did your friend do some driftwood collecting? I've got a wall hanging which a friend made from local driftwood and shells.

It's amazing that Boston cars aren't covered in dents and scratches. That is funny about the crosswalk - the complete opposite of what we've experienced in Canada, where the pedestrians absolutely expect you to stop for them. We saw one driver back up to make sure the crosswalk was completely clear.

It's a wonder there weren't tons of pileups at those places! No more ridiculous tollbooth stations now: everything is electronic, with transponders in the cars and gantries with detectors over the roads. Still, I imagine that your stare-down could come in handy at odd moments, like when road construction is closing a lane and you have to merge and the car next to you is being a jerk...

and point at the driver and tell them what to do. Surprising how often it works. The other day I thought someone was going to pull out in front of me, I pointed and said "oh no you don't" and he threw his hands up and ducked his head like "no ma'am sorry ma'am!"
