So LOTR fans are lagging far behind when it comes to putting the 'FAN" in fanatical. Still, I have high hopes for us.
I have seen this guy's home theater before in magazines and web sites:

Sure, Bakshi and Rankin-Bass are worse than most of the odd-numbered STs. But Jackson's films are even better than STWOK.

Or just not as fanatical. Well, that's not entirely true either (I've met some pretty fanatical fans in LOTR fandom...somewhat myself included hehe). There are those who wear costumes and make costumes (I've only accomplished one costume though...not sure I'd dive into making another or even wear it again), there are those who are avid collectors, those who attend conventions (though those are rare and somewhat small now) and, make their own hobbit holes (or at least try to) and such. But the fanbase has shrunk in the past few years (though it's still bigger than it was pre-movies I'm sure). But LOTR fans don't have have the 'stigma' put on us such as Star Trek fans for various reasons (maybe because the bigger fanbase for LOTR is so new when compared to Star Trek or even other, long existing fan bases? Maybe we just aren't as 'hardcore'? I'm sure there's a dozen more possible reasons).
Fandoms these days are quite interesting as well. Fans are pretty fickle I find. Those who were 'hardcore' LOTR fans (for instance) are now 'hardcore' fans of other franchises. The whole pirates fandom comes to mind. Once the last film is released and has been out a while the numbers in that fandom will dwindle and may even be non-existent in a few years. Many fans are quite fickle it seems in many genres (but that could be because of lack of interest in a genre anymore, lack of 'new' coming from the genre, et...). Maybe some like to be part of the 'next great fan craze'? Who knows.
It makes me wonder about the Harry Potter fanbase. The last book is being released this year. In the next few years the last of the movies will be filmed and released. Will the fanbase be as strong as it currently is 5 years from now? It will be interesting to see.

He's more of a Lewis book collector than a Tolkien collector, but Inklings man nonetheless. I'm reading his book now about some of the amazing finds he has come across over the years in tracking down rare books (that's my passion, in case anyone hasn't noticed!). University classes have come to his "Bird and Baby" basement in Indiana to see what the Inkings would have seen.
That's a lot more impressive to me than some silly Star Trek room with flashing lights or a ridiculous bat cave.

I wonder if he knows how 'Hobbit-like' his place is. It is actually more impressive than the Star Trek bachelor pad because its not just inside a structure but IS the structure.

i heard one...
just because some other fans show their fandom in a strong 'fanatical' visual doesnt mean that Tolkienites (who may be strong fans or just moderate fans of the book/movie) are weak.
