Idle "Idol" Chatter Can't Post

Apologies to Fin o' Pitt and Farawyn, but where is everyone?
Interesting week. My impressions:

Phil -- Less evil, even though he's gone back to full-on baldness. I actually enjoyed his performance and agreed with the judges that country is his genre. So why is this the first we're hearing of it? Was he trying to avoid pigeonholing himself a la Josh Gracin, or did he not know he was a good country singer?

Jordin -- It was just OK for me tonight, dawg, despite the judges' adulation.

Lakisha -- Started rough, but gave me some goosebumps later on. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. She hasn't been "brilliant" for me for weeks now.

Sanjaya -- Oh, that was so bad. I'll give him a point for the last note, but otherwise he was weak, unoriginal, and all over the place with the melody and the rhythm.

Chris -- Not good at all. He should be able to pull off a country song, so that was disappointing.

Melinda -- Loved it.

Blake -- I crossed my fingers for him, but I watched the show too late to vote. He was better than Sanjaya, but not much.

Should go: Sanjaya, of course, but will he?

Where's Frodo?

Alrighty.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Man, I can't stand country music but I endured. Surprisingly I thought most sang better than Latin week.

Phil - Much better then I was expecting. He was the best male singer of the night IMO.

Jordin - Good, very good.

Lakisha - I wasn't impressed.

Sanjaya - Worst of the night (again). Off key and boring.

Chris - I wasn't impressed. Pitchy and ran wild with notes.

Melinda - Great, as usual.

Blake - Another I was unimpressed with.

Should go: Sanjaya but more than likely it will be Blake or Chris.

What an interesting night! [In reply to] Can't Post

Best performance: Melinda, by 10 miles.

Next best: Phil! Who knew he was really a country singer? That's what I thought as soon as he started, and I'm glad the judges agreed. Nice tone, all-round excellent vocal. Unfortunately, it might be too late for him, since he hasn't built up a fan base.

Jordin -- I thought she was awful, but I'm not a fan anyway. Her tone is so harsh — it *literally* hurts my ears. Ironic that the judges scolded LaKisha for shouting, when Jordin is just as bad. I really hate that she has a good chance at winning.

LaKisha -- Eh. She didn't seem to understand the song at all (pace Martina).

Sanjaya -- Again, this was just embarassing to watch and hear. The guy behind the "vote the worst' Web site was on Craig Ferguson's show tonight, getting his 15 minutes. So proud of himself! What a dork!

Chris -- Yuck. Well, at least we now know that his nasal tone is deliberate. I still think he might actually have a voice, but he apparently has no interest in actually using it. Next!

Blake -- Demonstrated once again that he has no voice, and in fact, no discernable talent other than beat-boxing.

Should go: Sanjaya, but failing that, Blake, followed very closely by Chris.

Will go: Oh dear. I'm afraid it might be Phil, but with any luck, it will be Chris.

"Nasally" is a type of singing! ???? [In reply to] Can't Post

The way idiot is a state of mind? Chris did look really upset about VTech- I think they said he was originally from VA, so I'm sure that's where his little Simon backtalk came from.

Should go: Sanjaya or Chris
Will go: Sanjaya

I love that Simon is getting so bent out of shape about Sanjaya, but Sanjaya's 15 minutes seems to be about up. He's starting to believe his own hype and that's defeating the whole purpose as to why it's funny that he's still on the show.
Melinda great, the rest, bla bla bla.
I like Jordin's voice and eyebrow raise. I like Blake because he's somewhat different, but this show has become stale for me. No one seems to be having fun with it anymore, including the fans.

It hurts our ears, Precious! [In reply to] Can't Post

Phil -- Surprisingly good. Not fantastic, but country suits his voice quite well.
The only guy I gave positive points for the night.

Jordin -- First thought:"WTH does everybody do this song?!"
I've absolutely hated it just about every time, but this was much better for me.
I'll have to agree to disagree on this one, because I liked the vocal, but
as always, it's the performance that helped make her the apparent Chosen One.

Sanjaya -- GO HOME! Unbelievably, it got worse. Dude, find a key! STHU! Worst ever!

LaKisha -- I HATE this song, and she's no Carrie Underwood. JESUS, TAKE THE MIKE!
Boring. Pitchy. Shouty. Couldn't emote to save her life. More off-key than Sanjaya?
Her number may be up very soon, if not this week.

Chris -- I'll give him a pass on the wobbly start, due to the VA Tech effect. Got better, but then
became a nasally vocal mess. Yeah, I know a lot of country singers are nasally, but most of them
can also carry a tune.*sigh* Nasally is not a style. It's a fashion "Don't."

Melinda -- Loved it. Sassy! Move over Gretchen Wilson! Looked great, too.

Blake -- Sounds better if I don't look at him (weird mouth), but still 'off'.
Better than expected, but sooo not deserving of the last performance of the night 'pimp spot'...

My personal Bottom Three would be: Sanjaya, LaKisha, and Chris.

He's doing that *on purpose* [In reply to] Can't Post

What an idiot. Chris, I mean. Well, Sanjaya is doing most of it on purpose too, so make it a blanket statement.

Phil -- Really? Y'all think this was better for him? I tried the not-looking technique, and while I really enjoyed not looking at him I did not enjoy the song or his voice. He seems to pick these songs that just don't hang together but sort of ramble about and then end on a strong note... Go away. Or at least go back to wearing a hat.

Jordin -- I don't like this song, I don't care about this song (and I don't like country), but I thought she did very well. Again, I listened without watching, and I'm still not finding any of the faults you are, Aerin... Love her.

Sanjaya -- Again, I really enjoyed not watching him. How ... embarrassing. He doesn't have a bad voice - what there is of it. It's just too weak and insipid to carry off ... much of anything. And his stage presence... well, he has no stage presence or performance ability. Go away. Oh - and the song is "SHINY Happy People", fool, not "Shining Happy People". Get a clue. And go away.

LaKisha -- I like the song, and was mainly relieved that she didn't entirely mimic Carrie Underwood note for note. It was all right. I'm over her. And I thought her makeup made her look oddly bizarre. She should outlast half the others, but I don't know if I care any more.

Chris -- Seriously? After the judges' comments for the last many weeks, you're still singing "nasally" - - on purpose?? You're an idiot, and your voice is like fingernails on a blackboard, and I was begging for Sanjaya to come back halfway through your "song". Go away.

Melinda -- Love her. Best ever. And I don't think it's fair of Simon to reverse himself; he kept saying every week how refreshing it was that she was humble, and now he wants her to stop looking surprised when she's complimented. I don't think it's all an aw-shucks act; I think she was just well brought up to not assume she's fantastic and deserves all the praise in the world, and that she still is genuinely surprised at praise. She strikes me as someone who may not have had a great many compliments in her life. You don't get used to it all of a sudden if that's the case.

Blake -- I love Blake. Love his voice, love how he uses it, and (again) don't get the faults so many pick at in him. Unless he goes madly hip-hop, I'll buy his cd, and considering I buy maybe eight cd's a year that's saying something.

Should go home - Oh, God, so many to choose from. Sanjaya, but more than half of me would prefer Chris.

Will go - Chris or Phil. I expect Lakisha in the bottom three, just because Sajaya won't be.

My own Bottom Three would be: Chris, Sanjaya, Chris, Phil, and Chris.

WTH! [In reply to] Can't Post

I have no clue what the judges were smokin this week.

PHIL - Actually did a great job. I'm surprised nobody else saw the country-ness in this guy all along. I thought it was fairly apparent. Best male performance of the night, which unfortunately isn't saying much at this point.

JORDIN - She blew it out the box dawg! GREAT performance. Absolutely loved it. As she finished, I said to myself "Wow, after this week, I really believe she may win this thing." Simon said the same thing about 30 seconds later. She has easily passed Lakisha as #2, and may make a late run for the whole thing.

LAKISHA - My girl is back!!! No idea what the critics are talking about. She OWNED this song. I was literally blown away. I thought this was a fantastic performance.

SANJAYA - This is his week for the boot. No doubt. That was the worst performance ever.

CHRIS - Real bad. Was anyone else surprised he did a Rascal Flats tune? Hello!?!?! That's all he's been doing all season! Horrible performance, but more importantly: Shame on him for getting the cheap applause by mentioning VT during his criticism. Save that crap for your MySpace after the show. That was so inappropriate and Simon rightly rolled his eyes at you for doing that.

MELINDA - This girl could sing the phone book and I would love it. Easily the most talented, well-rounded contestant on the show. Jordin is starting to scare me, but I still think this is Melinda's year.

BLAKE - Pretty good overall. He's voice is always on the dge for me, like he has trouble carrying the strong notes. I didn't love this, but I didn't hate it.

BOTTOM THREE: Chris, Sanjaya and either Phil (just because of the numbers at this point) or Lakisha (because of the undeserved bad reaction by the judges).

WILL GO: Sanjaya.

Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament... There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth, and more than that: Death: by the divine paradox, that which ends life, and demands the surrender of all, and yet by the taste (or foretaste) of which alone can what you seek in your earthly relationships (love, faithfulness, joy) be maintained, or take on that complexion of reality, of eternal endurance, which every man's heart desires.

Our ears must work differently [In reply to] Can't Post

or something! I mean it completely literally when I say that Jordin's tone (or lack thereof) on her loud high notes hurts my ears. It's harsh and piercing; there's no depth to it at all. It's close to being a form of torture. To me, it sounds "shoutier" than any sound we heard from LaKisha (though I don't care for her tone on loud notes, either).

Blake at least doesn't shout, but his basic tone quality is not half as attractive at Phil's (or as a number of guys who sing in my choir, for that matter), and he has a very limited range and limited vocal technique (other than for making percussive sound effects). Phil has some richness and depth to his tone when he doesn't force it, and even Chris has a more attractive natural tone quality than Blake when he sings full voice with support (which he hardly ever does). IMHO, Blake has nothing going for him but a sense of style that appeals to (I assume) younger viewers.

Goodbya Sanjaya [In reply to] Can't Post

Finally.

I thought Jordin was amazing. She is peaking at the right time, where as Lakisha peaked at week 1 (and is declining). Melinda I think also peaked too early as well, even if she does well every week. Jordin will win, me thinks.

I think Blake is Dom Monaghan's brother or something.

WOO-HOO! [In reply to] Can't Post

Good riddance! I was also glad to see Blake in the bottom three, and I was glad to see Phil stick around.

LaKisha has a good voice (better than Jordin's), but she doesn't use it well and doesn't interpret songs well, so it won't surprise me if she goes next, though I still think she's better than Blake, Chris, or Jordin.

I can't agree with Foe that Melinda peaked too early. She hasn't "peaked" at all, because that would imply that she has declined, and she hasn't. She's given the best performance every week -- even at her worst, she's better than anyone else. If she doesn't win the whole thing, there's no justice. She's a better singer than anyone who has appeared on any season of Idol. Still, I'm afraid Jordin might win, because, as my friend says, she's "sparkly." But she's not in the same class as Melinda as a singer, in ANY respect, and if she wins, it will be a travesty.

Buh bye Sanjaya, try to have a sense of humor in all the Aftermath, and hang in there, kid!

Go Jordin!

I would like to see Melinda (duh) Jords and Blake as the last 3 standing. LaKisha is good, but I agree with Foe that she peaked too early. She needs to WOW everyone again. I do like how motherly she was with Sanjaya last night- very cute.

I have no use for Chris or Phil.

Thanks for posting this week, Finding Frodo!
