it's *just* about singing, but being able to sing is a prerequisite. As for the show's concept, the original intent was to use the competition as a way to find recording artists, and that's still the idea; the show's title doesn't alter that. And no, it's not true (as someone else has suggested in this thread) that studio magic can make anyone into a good singer. Recording techniques can boost a weak voice, and multiple takes can be used to fix isolated wrong notes and pitch problems, but no electronic trickery will get a great vocal out of a mediocre singer.

Well I didn't go quite that far, but in 5th or 6th grade I thought he was rather adorable. I think probably Sanjaya is probably in the same league.
