is that this is a cynical ploy by Howard Stern to create publicity for his satellite radio show, which has not lived up expectations. It's one thing for an individual viewer to vote for someone because he or she is "hot" or has a pleasing personality (or has a weird androgynous appeal), but it's quite another for a public figure to cynically try to manipulate the voting for his own benefit.

Some people feed off being able to get other people do things. HS is one of those people. I think this sort of personality manifests itself in all sorts of ways, some that look fairly benign. For example, I think internet trolls feed off getting people to 'do things'...which is argue with them. I also think a lot of posts by newbies that say, "Who's your favorite actor in LOTR?" where the newbie never comes back to answer or converse in the thread is a manifestation of this feeling a bit of importance or power by getting people to do something: post in a thread. I don't think this latter example is ill-intentioned. I just think these sorts of people aren't really feeling the urge to 'talk' to anyone... they just want attention. The more posts they get in a thread like that... the more important they feel. I don't think a lot of them even *care* what anyone's favorite actor is. They're just off to the next forum... the next board... to post another thread where people 'list' something. And how's that for wandering off topic?

That's clearly true of Howard Stern.

Getting people to do things against their better judgment seems to be his main purpose in life. In the case of "Vote the Worst," though, I think the desire to stimulate publicity for his radio show is a major motive. Since going to satellite, he's lost most of his audience; about 10 million of his former listeners have declined to sign up for pay radio. Ironically, his lucrative deal with Sirius is probably a factor (along with the rise of iPod) helping to put the company, and perhaps the satellite radio industry, out of business. Subscribers have increased, but the stock price has continued to decline, and the enormous expense of hiring Stern has not paid off.

there weren't rules on why or how you should vote for someone. "Vote for who you want to stay on the show." I personally think the people that are voting for Sanjaya as a joke have much better taste than those who are voting for him because they truly like him. I choose not to vote for him, but that's my choice. I think it's funny as hell that everone is getting so upset over a tv show. More people vote on American Idol than in our presidential election- it *should* have some fun poked at it! As for HS, he jumped on VFTW's bandwagon and the media picked up on it. I guess it's easier to blame him than to think some random dude with a website can undermine their entire ICON, American Idol.

Just jerks who have to try to spoil other people's fun out of pure spite. And the random dude wasn't getting anywhere without Stern.

The ponyhawk has been all over the news and Sanjaya is in Google's Top 10. The definition of "Fun" may be debateable.
